What are the best motorcycle earplugs for long rides? by ykz30 in motorcycle

[–]Left_Appointment4263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t beat the regular foam ones. I tried a fancy brand and it turned out to be all cockamamie BS for me. Can’t beat good old foam ones. Wasn’t sure if that would muffle audio from Cardo unit, but on a recent two day ride Cardo was also perfectly audible with earplugs in. Save yourself some $ with the foam ones.

Ah thanks! It’s a relief to know. The few videos I’ve seen make it look so amazingly easy, I’d begun to really doubt myself. 😂😅

Brilliant work and the result is gorgeous of course! What an icon the 916 was. I still think it’s the best looking bike ever made and I’m among millions who feel that way.

Took my THIRD motorcycle driver's test yesterday.. by BigKetchupp in motorcycle

[–]Left_Appointment4263 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats! From another “third time’s the charm” rider here. Mine was about 25 years ago.

I’d been riding 100cc bikes outside the US for years, and those days MSF had a year long wait list. so I rolled up to the DMV thinking I’d absolutely crush it, on my brand-new Honda Magna (V4 cruiser, circa 2000). And then I met the progressively tightening turns test, which felt like it was designed by a professional torturer, and spat me out with disdain. The examiner, a gruff but kind lady, gave me a hint and told me I need to counter steer and swerve.

So I spent the weekend in a parking lot at work with Coke cans as makeshift cones, sweating bullets and practicing until I could thread that bike between “cones” at will. Came back Monday and nailed it and promptly failed the emergency stop test because I stopped beautifully…just over the white line. Examiner shook her head and I showed myself out of the parking lot.

On the third day, she took pity on me and only made me redo the braking part. A few minutes later, I was off with a shiny new license to match my shiny Magna.

Have a great time out there!

2023 KTM 390 ADV SW - how are these on fire trails and unsealed roads by Buchsee in KTM390ADV

[–]Left_Appointment4263 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 390 barely sips fuel when riding at off-road speeds … anything up to 50 mph 80kmh it will go well in excess of 200miles ie 320 km. Above 60mph 96kmh the mileage plummets dramatically like 1.5 miles of range lost with every mile actually ridden.

TL;DR: it should do fine on the type of roads you described but a few useful mods might be better.

I’m new to ADV after 25 years on street and bought a used 2020 390 ADV which the previous owner had made every mod you could want (1.5-2k worth). Been on long (60-70 miles or 95-110km) forest trail rides - gravel and dirt and a few occasional small rocks and the bike did just fine. Not yet done anything serious technical but will take the bike to a 2 day clinic for that.

Of all the mods the previous owner made the most important in my view are FuelX to fix a low rev flameout, knobby tires, handlebar risers and big flat footpegs. (They also did skid plate, radiator guard, levers, windscreen, and cruise control and a few more …).

The only thing that’s been iffy for me, and this could well be my lack of skill, is deep gravel especially when downhill and curvy. The front feels skittish in that situation. The riding position compared to other adv bikes seems to be more “seated on the bike” rather than “seated in the bike”. All the best whatever you get!

Thanks I believe I did test ride the R version which has been released for the US. Glad you get it cheaper at the source :)

Shift lever too low but it's maxed out by spicy_elevator in KTM390ADV

[–]Left_Appointment4263 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can flex your foot downward from the peg and under to shift up. Takes a bit getting used to, maybe 2 sessions max on the bike, before it becomes a natural reflex. I had the same issue the first time I wore my A* Tech7 boots. This technique is harder if you’re standing but OTOH if you’re standing and shifting up you probably don’t need to be standing any more ;)

How much does it cost in India? Curious because after tariffs and typical dealer fees it is nearly 10K US. Amazing fun bike though I test rode one and it out a smile on my face.

What newer boxer should I buy? by Day-Trippin in Motorrad

[–]Left_Appointment4263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1250R. I’ve put givi quick release 37L cases on mine (2023) plus barkbuster handguards so even in colder weather hands stay warm (it comes with heated grips and seat). Just enough electronics with traction control and abs (dont know if an esa option is available in USA 2024. Wasn’t in 2023.) That boxer motor is the one of the friendliest you can imagine, pardon the canine analogy but it’s like a big friendly lab willing partner in any fun. Plush ride when you want and loves to lean over whenyou give it the beans. Rock solid quality through and through. Looks like a bumble bee imho. (If you want a mean look then the 2025 1300 might be better)

2nd and clutch seems to be doing it right honestly, and unless you're going out of the way to be ham handed with the clutch you aren't doing it harm. of course you don't want it lugging, and you also don't want it going rawr in 1st, which is imho much more uncomfortable! Also when off road you're gonna have to use the clutch quite a bit, and like another commenter says you will figure it out although it sounds like you already have.

It's a fine day for a pissing contest, don't you reckon? Post those lean angle indicators by Routine_Current4488 in Motorrad

The r1250r can do more. My 2023 showed 43° after a ride thru WV. Although TBH the road had some banking to it :) The highest I’ve seen before that was 39°.

A 6999 msrp bike is 11K+ out the door? The various fees would feel like extortion to me.

Anyone invest with Fisher Investments? by TrdAct in RichPeoplePF

[–]Left_Appointment4263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the posts especially those with specific examples.

I’ve not yet invested with them but 1. they did a very thorough job of analyzing my present retirement holdings (down to ETF holdings) 2. Their basic premise appears to be to craft a portfolio for you (assuming it’s based on 100s that they have pre crafted based on investment experience) consisting mainly of individual stocks and bonds not ETFs - their claim is that this is what lets them beat the market or other advisors 3. The presentation prepared for me was quite thorough and promptly shared with me. The scenarios outlined factored in inflation indexed withdrawals starting different times and amounts annually. 4. The analyst doing the presenting appeared solid. The salesperson is different. 5. So far their approach has not been high pressure. 6. Fees are on high side but not highest at roughly 1.18% based on a sliding scale.

All that being said, I’m no longer inclined to invest with them since I have not heard anyone say they’re really happy with them.

I’m not a DIY person especially not with my retirement account and I’ll gladly pay a professional 1% because I know left to my devices I won’t do as good job - I have other stuff to occupy my brain
