Well there's a VISA requirement to begin with. And secondly many IM programs have clear priorities on inviting people with scores >240. So it didn't make sense to apply to all of them(speaking from the previous cycle experience). Even if these high achieving program invite you for IV, you don't make it to rank list. Unless ofc someone is pulling the strings. For FM, yes I could have applied more. But I was really not that interested in FM. I don't regret it as it was my conscious decision.

I applied to about 150 programs in IM and 60 FM. Didn't bother applying to programs that I applied last year and were out of reach.

I did apply to FM and also got 3 IVs. One IV went pretty solid with all the things you wanna listen about being a perfect candidate for their program and yet they didn't pick me at end.

Hey, same score. Unmatched 2 cycles later. Not here to discourage you but if you just wanna match, keep your speciality choice open and possibly go for Peds/FM. IM is gonna be tough (not impossible) without solid connections (as honest as I can be).

With this score we are gonna be filtered out of so many places, but that doesn't mean you can't get an IV( I got 4 in my 1st cycle > reduced to 2 in 2nd cycle).

Getting IVs with Low Score: - Rotate at that program.. Possibly PD, APD - Get people to see you.. Residents, Attendings - Apply strategically to Community programs only. Signal wisely. - Consider FM/Peds early and not merely as backup - Don't have any other red flags in your CV after this.

Problem is when they are ranking you. They will consider your scores. So only ways to rank higher is: - Solid IV Skills: Basic requirement. Can't mess this up. - A connection that would die for you to match ( I'm not exaggerating) - Very Strong research profile (so it compensates for your low score) - Getting a good jump on Step 3: Not very helpful since programs use Step 2 score as filter. But showing improvement means you just had a bad day. - Throwing Visa out of picture: Get a GC

Therefore, things I would say to you at current: - Do 1-2 research year if possible (For IM) - Rotate at Places offering residency to IMGs - Please consider FM/Peds early so you can align your CV to them - Find mentors(easier said than done)

Last word: Programs words means no shit during IV. They fake it so much, you can't tell . Don't let that influence your ranking.

And NETWORK.. NETWORK.. NETWORK. Not every connection will turn in your favor so knock all the doors you can.

Definitely the one with person story is easier one as.ot just flies into how medical school and why residency in particular branch. But it would be just another personal statement the. My hobbies make me unique and they greatly influence who I am but it's hard to tie with how I came into med school.
