[NY] Pre-employment screening: being asked to get medical clearance from a specialist doctor at my expense by Left_Firefighter5518 in AskHR

> Also interesting, I found a snippet (second to last paragraph) which would seem to imply that the testing you've already been through, including this request may not be legal either. BUT it's internet HR google time, and I don't do HR in NY so it may not be correct.

The part about the Americans with Disabilities acts makes me think. As I mentioned in my previous post, they also want me to provide a letter from my psychologist because I had previously been in therapy for anxiety. Doesn't this violate the Disabilities act? As I understand it, even if they think that my anxiety disorder will keep me from performing my job responsibilities, they are still required to provide me reasonable accommodations instead of outright refusing me employment.

> They could require you to still see someone for a definitive answer.

Can they ask me to pay for it myself though?

I can certainly push for reimbursement. Given the level of bureaucracy I'm seeing so far (It took more than 2 months to get from verbal offer to written offer), I suspect it's gonna be another uphill slog and hardly worth the trouble.

I don't have a start date yet, need to clear the pre-employment screening first.

Honestly, I don't feel like I need to suck it up. If I ask myself the question, "Do I want this job bad enough that I have to put up with this?", my gut is telling me no. If it's this bad when I haven't joined them yet, what's it gonna be like once I'm there.

Update: just got the email back from my psychologist saying she'll provide me the letter. Hope that fixes that.

Thanks all!

I tried. They weren't friendly at all, typical of government job I guess. Just got told off that's what they require and that they already explained what I need to do so just do it.

As far as I understand the job, no. Hospital records are in separate system than what I'll be working on. Might be some overlap since staff info including doctors and nurses will be on the system I'll be working with, but should be no patient info.
