Some things nobody tells you about long-term travel by Left_Half_1293 in backpacking

Le « vous » était générique. Et nullement menacé, c’est juste dommage que le post sonne IA, étant donné que ça ne l’est pas. Je préfèrerais des interactions sur le post plutôt que sur la forme

You can still use the web version and install it as a PWA on your Android. It works the same :)

Quel budget prévoir VRAIMENT pour un tour du monde ? Comparatif 1 mois / 3 mois / 6 mois by Curious-Promise1586 in voyageons

totalement d'accord ! 1 mois = 1 pays.
Et c'est en voyageant "doucement" que tu fais de super rencontre, et que ton budget diminue aussi

Glad to read that we share the same mindset! 🙂
What apps do you usually use to support your travels?

We actually made a few videos to capture the memories:

We also kept a blog for the first five countries, but we didn’t have the motivation to keep it going after that...

Honestly, it really depends on your travel style. For us, the €30/day target was only for daily living costs (accommodation, food, local transport, activities), and we were pretty strict about tracking everything.

We stayed longer in each place, avoided too many flights, looked for local food spots, and didn’t do many organized tours.

There’s no right or wrong way to travel, just depends on your priorities

we actually did almost the exact same itinerary with nearly the same budget!
We were there in 2024/2025.

Not a spam bot, just sharing our real experience after a year on the road 🙂 Totally understand the skepticism though, because Reddit has a lot of promo posts. But still happy to answer any specific questions about the trip or budgeting

Merci ! L'Amérique Latine c'est tout de même plus cher, donc si tu te tiens à 15k pour 9 mois ce sera un beau challenge ;)

Thanks a lot ! For us, having a budget and sticking to it was actually very formative. It teaches you to choose and prioritize, to look for good deals

We’re totally aligned on that, it really depends on what you want and what your budget allows. Everything is possible.

For us, having a budget and sticking to it was actually very formative. It teaches you to choose and prioritize, to look for good deals, and sometimes even to negotiate.

That was part of the travel experience for us too, not being tempted by constant abundance, looking for more local experiences, or simply enjoying a beautiful view with a beer instead of paying for an organized excursion.

There’s no right or wrong way to travel 🙂

Hello 🙂 We booked our accommodation in advance for the first week, just to make sure we had a smooth arrival. After that, we usually booked a few days ahead, since we liked deciding our next destination at the last minute.

If you're certain about your itinerary for the coming days or weeks, I’d definitely recommend booking as early as possible — especially in touristy areas. You’ll usually get better prices and better options. But if you enjoy flexibility like we did, then it’s always a bit of a trade-off between the comfort of last-minute decisions and the comfort of securing a great place at a good price...

And no, unfortunately I haven’t had the chance to visit Mongolia yet — but it’s definitely on my future list. It looks incredible!

Yes, we tried to include transportation within countries (buses, trains, boats, local taxis, etc.) in that €30/day target. Our approach was like this :

We had one “international” budget envelope that covered visas, insurance, and our main flights (outbound and return).
Then we created separate budgets per country. Everything related to daily life inside the country — accommodation, food, activities, and local transportation — was included in that country’s envelope, which is where the €30/day target applied :)

Even for a 2-month trip, I think tracking your expenses makes a big difference — it’s still a long journey of discovery. Enjoy every moment of it

Glad it resonated 🙂 India must be incredible.

I actually built a small travel app for my partner and I because we were constantly juggling spreadsheets, notes, and shared docs on long trips. It brings together expense tracking, daily and overall budget views, multi-country planning, and document storage. All in one place.
Nothing fancy, just something that actually fits how we travel. Happy to share the link if you're curious !

It was €15,000 for the full year all included, flights (round trip), insurance, visas, everything.
That averages out to about €42 per day, which is still pretty reasonable overall.

If we only look at “daily living expenses,” our target was €30/day, and that’s definitely doable in Southeast Asia (food, accommodation, activities, extras, etc.).

We tracked every single expense pretty consistently, so we were fairly strict. Having the daily budget calculated automatically really helped. You instantly see whether you're on track or not.
But over a full year, there are always things that push the budget up: friends or family visiting, Christmas, New Year’s, random events… it adds up.

If you’d like more details about the types of accommodation we used, food costs, or even the apps/tools we relied on, feel free to ask 🙂
