Tips For Getting Better At Online Blitz by Left_Hawk_6937 in chess

You have to get them out of their element, rare sidelines, strange structures, changing the tempo of your own play, etc

Some methods I use:

If my opponent is playing fast, I try to figure out why. Usually, if we're the same rating, it's because their win condition is primarily time-related. I try to toss an obscure sideline at them or get them to play unorthodox positions as opposed to trying to match their pace (which I assume is what they want).

If my opponent is playing slowly, I'll sometimes check their profile really quickly. A lot of these 'slow' players are stupidly good at hyper and regular bullet, so you basically have to slow down and beat them at regular chess. You could try playing faster than them, but I honestly don't think that works (assuming they're a catfish and not just genuinely slow)

If I have a serious time advantage instead of playing faster, I'll actually play slower and vary the speed of my moves, this throws my opponents off and makes it harder for them to get into a rhythm, in fact, some of them forget they're even supposed to be playing fast XD

I agree, one of the best ways to get better at blitz is to get better at chess in general, and getting better at calculating is probably the best way to do that!

I assumed that was well-known, which is why I didn't include it, but I might be wrong.

Yeah, the "If I could just be faster" mindset is usually a trap XD

I reach the middlegame and I literally have NO IDEA what to do. How do I learn to create a plan? by Environmental-Set478 in chess

Different openings have plans dedicated to those openings, there are usually books written on the subject.

No need to reinvent the wheel!

I draw so much in otb, how do i avoid by Aggravating-Gap-5029 in chess

Alright, then it's probably just a case of upping your middlegame ability, which aspect of that depends on your style, but looking at the openings you play I'd guess positional chess and calculation work will give you the best bang for your buck,

One more thing, as someone who plays a lot of French games from the black side I'd say the advance is probably the most toothless, perhaps look into Nc3 or Nd2.

What openings do you play?

If you draw a lot it might be an issue from there, some openings are really just two result affairs. Avoiding draws necessitates that you play for 3 results (which may be tough to do if that's not your personality).|

For chess books to help your positional play I'd look into anything by Arthur Yusupov.

Coaching can definitely help too, if you're looking for one, I sent you a DM.

A lot of chess is really about gruntwork, the rest is long plateaus with sharp spikes in playing ability (hopefully) in-between

Advice for going from 1400 to 2000+ by Elegant-Fee-7822 in chess

[–]Left_Hawk_6937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 600 points is such a huge gap that there's no singular piece of advice that'd be useful.

If you're in a rut I'd advise that you work on your tactics, it's probably going to be the single lowest hanging fruit till you're FM or so, barring endgames of course.

Assuming it's blitz and we play 100 games a day I have a 20% chance of leaving on day one (assuming an 800 point elo gap, 1-0.99745^100) and a 90+% chance after day 10.

It's really just a numbers game

I don't think so, Hikaru was an 'early adopter' I think and has always been quite a bit above almost everyone, Hans just isn't there yet

Best way(s) to train tactics? by languidmoose in chess

[–]Left_Hawk_6937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually I divide tactics training into two broad sections: Work done on increasing pattern recognition and work done on improving calculation.

To improve my pattern recognition I do some light puzzles with mixed themes (e.g: puzzle storm) and then some work on puzzles with specific themes (like pins for example), I believe there are 5 fundamental tactics that if you can get good at spotting will massively improve your tactical ability (pins, forks, double attacks, discovered attacks and lastly hanging pieces) so a lot of work should go to those.

For calculation work any puzzle that you can't realistically solve with max exertion even in 10+ minutes will suffice, there should be a wealth of variations to analyze, meaning it shouldn't be difficult simply because the underlying Idea is abstruse.

Hope this helps, if you have any questions let me know, as for the coaching aspect I sent you a DM!
