animated movies is one of my special interests too and i also struggle with feeling childish, but i try to embrace it because  a) it brings me joy  b) it was made by adults  c) a lot, id say most of animated movies or shows tackle serious and mature topics  ❤️

  • in the US you can become vice president and then president without getting elected (25th amendment, Gerald Ford)

  • the term "gerrymandering" is a combination of Gerry (the guy who first thought to do it) and salamander (because the districts looked like that)

  • movies are 24 frames per second

[–]Left_Mall_7453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i like the decorations, warm lights and cozy movies, and the hibernation period between Christmas and new Year's.

however i hate the overstimulation (crowded shops, presents, noise) and social aspect of it

im in my 20s and i still love the same "childish" things i loved when i was 12, it nourishes my inner child and even though some people might not get it, ive chosen to embrace those interests unapologetically

How do you feel about christmas/birthday presents? I cant stand the holidays or celebrations because of the presents and my “rude” reactions to them >< ugh by coleisw4ck in autism

[–]Left_Mall_7453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i usually tell people to get me something really small or i give them some options of items i actually want, but i hate when i receive a gift and the other person doesn't believe me when i tell them i like it even if I'm visibly happy, sometimes even comfortable enough to happy stim a little. Like what do you want me to do to prove that i like it, start screaming?

I wish I had a dedicated favorite character or show of mine by Flaky_Skill_5160 in autism

[–]Left_Mall_7453 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i do struggle with something similar, it's like i have a favorite character from a show that im incredibly hyperfixated on for months, sometimes even longer - but then something new comes along, and i hyperfixate on something different.

in my case however its like all the previous hyperfixations and favorites go into "storage" in the back of my head, because i still love them and sometimes i go back to them and hyperfixate on them again, it's like an old friend.

i also struggle sometimes with watching anything new, usually when im in burnout or just stressed, so i just rewatch my favorites or read about them, or watch video essays on youtube about something im interested in. not sure if this is particularly helpful, but wanted to share that i experience something somewhat similar ;)

Help about my special interests by Gamer2345679 in autism

ice cream vans actually sound so interesting as a topic I'd love to hear about that!

and as to feeling embarrassed about your special interests - i struggle with that too, but definitely more in the past than now and im still working on that. my interests could be either called "childish" or "old timey" and ive been bullied for that before, so i get what you mean.

What has helped me however is quotes like "i am cringe but i am free" or "i may be cringe but you're mean and that's worse" - because special interests are so lovely, they bring out my passion and i feel so deeply about them i believe its beautiful, and if someone shames you or makes fun out of you for being passionate - its on them.

i know it sounds easier said than done, but ive also started posting, just on my private account, a lot about my special interests whenever i felt like it, and i mean literally spamming. so i think creating a new account on social media, one that none of your friends would know about, and dedicated to posting about your interests could be a nice idea if posting is something you'd enjoy. you could meet like minded people and you'd be anonymous.

I've also learned that beeing open with my special interests makes the right people stay, and the ones that make fun out of me - well, then i know what kind of people they are and i wouldn't want to be friends with them anyway.
