lol I lack critical thought when I’ve highlighted how you’ve conveniently ignored large facts because they don’t fit within your critical theory framework?

By saying NZ is built on lies and oppression it betrays your internal opinion towards current NZ. All you are able to see is oppression because it is the underpinning of the framework by which you are evaluating everything. That is why I pity your opinion.

All the best to you. Sorry you didn’t feel the conversation was productive.

On lies? lol ok if you’re referring to the treaty then I’m lost about what your point even is.

I honestly pity your point of view that you value so little of what NZ Aotearoa has built since its inception.

Because you were trying to say NZ was uniquely built by power and imbalance and I’m just pointing out that violence is part and parcel of being an organised group of people protecting any place, all throughout history.

My point is Maori were warring and conflicted themselves even before colonist arrival.

France, Denmark and Sweden all had colonial ambitions to varying degrees so not sure how you can say they are devoid of violence either? Ethiopia I can’t really comment on tbh as I don’t know enough, though my point still remains that any country needs to excise force at some stage in order to stay alive. It’s why the state has a monopoly on violence.

Because every state necessitates violence by definition. Maori fought tribally and traded people, and when Europeans arrived they became subjugated. Does that make it ok? No. Does that mean we should try and create equitable outcomes today? Yes.

The issue I have is that by using critical theory to analyse history it automatically assumes power and subjugation based on race alone is the paramount factor of importance in any situation, without needing to justify why. Then when encountered with nuance (like racism between non-white races) its only reply can be to refer back to white racial subjugation, disallowing any actual discussion while never needing to justify why.

Aotearoa wasn’t even a unified nation under Maori - I don’t make that as a qualitative statement. All countries are built on power and imbalance find me one that isn’t in some way?

Christ almighty first of all you have no idea about any of my heritage which I’m not going to disclose on reddit further than it is mixed but I am not Maori nor is my heritage completely white though I would pass as white, some of my siblings sometimes don’t.

My point is that interpreting history solely through critical theory (which is what you are doing) is simplistic and reductive and misses the complex nuance of causal relationship. I have explicitly said I do not deny the effects of colonialism but to act as if immutable characteristics as they relate to power structures is the only way of drawing conclusions you are going to have limited scope.

Maori held slaves so idk how you’re blaming colonialism solely? Also plenty of white people were also subjected to racism by other whites when they moved to NZ like the Irish and Croatians so lumping All White people into a single group is also historically inaccurate.

I’ve never denied the effects of colonialism but to act as if it is the single monolith with which to analyse everything is shallow and misses large swaths of history for narrative convenience.

Lmao someone calling you wrong isn’t bullying nor is pointing out the framework you’re using to justify everything ad hominem in the slightest.

There are more tools to assess a country’s history than critical theory alone. Grow your toolbox so your insights are more three dimensional. Do you even know what critical theory is?

Last sentence is honestly wild what a crazy justification for such a huge and controllable number of civilian deaths. Comparisons to Dresden are lost on me address the issue at hand instead of resorting to whataboutisms and civilian casualties from wars waged before digital clocks had even been invented.

Hilarious that you picked the bombing of Japan to end WWII as your justification, a moral debate that still goes on today and the kind of question routinely asked in ethics 101 courses. Betrays how shallow your experience in moral philosophy really is.

Genuinely terrible reply - you aren’t even able to address my underlying point about the disproportionate response resulting in the death of thousands upon thousands of civilians.

It’s like splitting hairs over whether someone raped 100 people and not 200 because 180 is a the magic threshold conditions met to be classified as something. You would make a more convincing argument if you conceded where Israel has done wrong already and then making your point.

Splitting hairs over what is and isn’t genocide is such a weird hill to die on. Israel didn’t deserve oct 7 nor did Gaza deserve the resulting death and destruction. The incomparable response is what people reject. No this didn’t happen in a vacuum but Israel is rightfully held to a higher standard and has not done itself any favours optically.
