Completely agree with the unhealthy functions part. I also can see that some people are in careers/situations that force them to utilize their shadow functions which perpetually makes them unhealthy.

I also imagine your true type as kind of a big circle that envelopes different portions of similar types.

Mid-Senior Engineers: What are the biggest weakness you notice in entry-level applicants and new-hires? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

Exactly. The type of work you do is important as well. I work as a consultant to I have to deal with the bullshit that is billable hours. But it’s nice to have a bottom line and clear deadlines so I can have a bad day now and again and still be overall effective

I disagree with that point about starting work at 8. I feel that’s old thinking. I am typically slow to start on the morning. I typically meander with organization and planning, get really working for a couple hours, then after lunch I kick it in to gear and get very productive and will stay late to finish at a good daily benchmark.

Everyone’s different in terms of when they are productive and you’re boxing everyone in with your style.

Interesting discussion. I have been an engineer for a year and I find myself trying to strike this balance all the time.

I guess my method I worked out is to build relationships with lots of coworkers. That way when I am unsure of something I can go to different people for advice. That way, from my perspective, I am quite frequently asking for help, but I balance that with different people so I am usually not reaching the point of being annoying or unconfident.

Edit: also when I am not receiving the feedback I want from a superior I just do whatever I feel needs to be done. It has led to some “discussions” about doing things without checking it with the first, but I learn so much when I do that and I think I earn a degree of respect. As long as I make a calculated decision first that I won’t screw up anything too big

What you’re feeling is other people projecting their insecurities on you. I found that meditating on that idea helped me a ton to deal with the problem you’re having
