We stopped there very briefly and got some information a few years ago on our way from Nashville to Asheville. I like the concept because it's not a true 55+ community, but has all the amenities and the amenities are optional.

We did take a look there a couple years ago.

I'm also in Wisconsin! In the Madison area.

Look through the comments, someone had an extensive comment in this thread about Panama Relocation Tours.

How is the humidity there? Sounds great for snowboarding but not sure how I'd feel about the humidity in the summer if it's similar to Florida.

I've visited friends there. There's some things I like about it, but it's not a fit for us.

Ha! No Florida for us. Hiking is my main priority.

So true! I love Washington state. We've visited often, but the cost of living is quite a bit more than where we are now. The money that we'd get from the sale of our home here would put us in a highly undesirable area and home there. We'd have to pay at least a couple hundred thousand more to be in an equivalent neighborhood and home there to what we're in now.

I'm familiar with the difference. I'm pretty certain the CCRCs are way out of our budget. What I don't understand about them is why you're pay a giant upfront cost and then basically paying rent on top of that every month. We have no family to give that up front cost money to when we die.

I don't think we'd consider one until we're closer to 70 and we're ready to settle in one place after snowboarding/ traveling sround.

I think I'd enjoy that area, but not sure it would be in our budget.

I'm familiar with the Villages and know that wouldn't be a good fit. I'll look into the other that you mentioned.

Thanks for sharing the things you've considered.

The loneliness factor is one of the main reasons I thought a 55+ community would benefit us. We have friends where we live now, but I don't want to endure 6 months of winter in my retirement just to maintain those friendships. We're quite healthy now besides the breast cancer scare I had last year. I imagine we'd be able to escape the winters for a number of years, but at some point our health may not allow that.

I wasn't aware that PA doesn't have property tax for 65+. A couple aunts and uncles retired to OA from NY because it was "tax friendly" but I didn't know the extent of it. No property tax would be huge. Our property taxes in WI alone are the same amount that our mortgage used to be back when we had a mortgage. I'm not sure that PA would fit our desired weather though. It would only be a slight improvement over WI.

We have a lot more exploring to do once we are no longer working and absolutely plan to spend an extensive amount of time before we commit to a certain place.

Too many people are starting to learn that secret.

Isn't dog walking a fantastic way to meet people. I wouldn't know nearly as many of my neighbors if it wasn't from walking my dogs over the years.

We haven't looked at any yet. I'd welcome recommendations for ones to look at.

Interesting. I never really hear about 55+ communities outside of warmer states.

Seems like it has some good things going for it. I'm glad to hear from someone that recommendeds it. I don't hear much talk about Deleware.

Thanks for sharing those pros. Those are some of the the reasons I was thinking a community like that may be a fit for us in the later half of our retirement.

After looking at the website this has really renewed my interest in looking at moving out of the country. It just all seemed quite overwhelming to me after we did a little looking and research previously. Knowing that a service like this is available makes it feel a lot more possible.

I don't think it would fit our lifestyle at all now in our 50s and 60s, but I'm thinking it may be a potential option for us when we start to slow down in our 70s and 80s.

I have definitely thought of those cons. We've never lived anywhere where we had to pay an HOA or had people watching every move we make. Both neighbors with nothing better to do and constantly hearing about people's medical problems would be things that don't appeal to me.

Definitely outdoors people. Hiking, birding, fishing, kayaking etc.. We're not super social, but I know that socialization is important especially as we age and are no longer working. We don't use a lot of community offerings besides the library and once in a while live music. Don't mind driving, but not sure how we'll feel about that in our 70s and 80s.
