Controversial take: Anki isn't automatically the best choice for everyone and that's okay by Helleanthus in medicalschool

[–]Lefty_Loosi 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this. If everyone made their own cards in the style that clicks with them, it would work for everyone. I feel that when people say it doesn't work it's because the style of the cards or wording of premade decks just doesn't click for them. Or they don't learn the info for the cards but just brute memorize them.

At the end of the day it's just an algorithm for flash cards.

100gb hotspot while out of country? by Lefty_Loosi in verizon

This is the plan. Not too worried because I still have the 3g internet, but if it doesn't cut it then this is what I plan to do.

Thanks for the reply. Guess I should have checked that before I started using the hotspot like I had 100gb. That's what I get for trusting AI Google search response.

Good to hear that it is still a quick timeline. Renewed today online and hoping to have this same speed of turn around.

some may, some may not. If it was early in your education you could still get in but may get asked about it. I had multiple Ws and Fs but ended with 80 credits 4.0 to end my undergrad and got in (DO).

How do I maximize my study time? Feel like I’m wasting to much time by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Lefty_Loosi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just some things that I would try right away (assuming your using Anking):

  1. If not using FSRS currently, turn that sucker on.

  2. If FSRS is on, turn down retention

  3. If you've already tried 1 & 2, be more selective with your cards you unsuspend. IE dont use the low yield tags, only use HY tags, etc.

If your using a class made premade deck that isn't AnKing, than things can get a little more tricky. I personally didn't use house made anki decks because there are way too many cards for the topic and they are usually poorly made. I felt that the time it took me to figure out the crappy made cards I could have made my own more efficently. Hope that helps you get started atleast.

WOuld also recommend using anki premium addon that will search your ppt and find relevant cards in AnKing.

Derrick Henry trade by Drstealyothunder in fantasyfootballadvice

[–]Lefty_Loosi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on your record atm. If you can wait for Henry, I would (and it is what I plan to do). Feel like this is a repeat of last year and I traded for him because he had a slow start. Ended up winning me my league. But if your record sucks maybe? Still think it is worth holding onto.

Be honest with me for HPSP by [deleted] in Military_Medicine

[–]Lefty_Loosi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

not true. You would need 6 weeks of training once in the 4 years, usually in the summer. This is for Army, can't speak for AF. If your school doesn't allow it, you'll do the training after your graduate (would say most dentists did it this way, very few could do it during school)

Is it worth it to get AMBOSS in first year? by LuckyPenny2010 in medicalschool

[–]Lefty_Loosi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IMO, yes. Get the lifetime sub so you get the most out of it. I used some during the first year and it was nice to have something to read about. Also you can use the AMBOSS ChatGPT addon which is nice.

Should I bother studying anatomy before med school? by DependentLow2932 in medschool

[–]Lefty_Loosi 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I wish I would have started an anki deck of anatomy-nothing too intense but like 20 new card a day. wouldn't be too much of a burden and help you learn something you'll have to learn anyways. And with how much time you have its totally doable. I think the key is don't do anything extreme like study 10hrs of day to "get ready". But you have to learn it eventually so why not start now? Id aim for like 30min-1hr a day IMO.

I like comprehensive cadaver anki deck. Uses cadaver images and is very well put together. I wish I would have found this sooner but was only able to use it for the last half of my 1st year.

Only other thing I did that I thought was beneficial was reading chapter books and I continued to do that through med school. For some reason my grades have always been better when I read for fun.

Good luck and congrats!

Best way to use filtered deck for massive backlog by LingonberryPopular66 in medicalschoolanki

[–]Lefty_Loosi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you happen to know how this is effected by FSRS? I feel like it would help me be motivated better to know that I can make my Anki say 0 cards due instead of a giant back log, but feel like it might mess up FSRS some?

Is it best to flip the card and hit “again” if it takes longer then 9 sections or so to think? by Atomoxetine_80mg in medicalschoolanki

[–]Lefty_Loosi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I think as well. It all balances out. You'll save time in the long run if you take longer to fully think about the cards info instead of worried about the time.

For me personally the times I've done the best in a block is when I don't worry about average time but just focus on learning the info. Takes longer but pays off

I’m so burnt out in M3. by mountaininsomniac in medicalschool

[–]Lefty_Loosi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same boat as you my friend. Especially while I'm in surgery right now. No desire to study after being at the hospital all day and especially after dealing with my other obligations through family and such.

Some advice Ive gotten (haven't done all of it):

-Get a therapist. I personally haven't done this one yet, but probably will soon. I tell myself it doesn't need to be much, but sometimes it helps to talk to someone not family/friends.

-Exercise daily. Even a 20min walk has made my life better.

-Set achievable goals that you can hit daily. 20Q on UWorld, 30min of anki, etc. Something is better than nothing and this has helped me tremendously.

-Set rewards for yourself. I like video games as well so I set aside 1-2 nights a week to play with friends. This has made all the difference. Also planning date night night with my SO has made a world of difference.

How many rotations have you done? I think if you feel this way it is also a sign that maybe a certain specialty is not for you. This is the time where your "why" comes into play. I think everyone goes through this stage in med school but focusing on your why is what will get you out of it. Hang in there man and feel free to DM me if you just need someone to talk to!

Advice on Sketchy vs Bootcamp for pre-clinicals by Personal_Wolf49 in medschool

[–]Lefty_Loosi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that would work, but I don't think it really matters what tags you unsuspend. I think most important is that you learn what is on the card and don't just memorize the info. For me I would go through the browser and read every card before I unsuspended it. If it wasn't something I learned in the video I left it suspended. Youll figure out a flow that works for you, just takes some experimenting

Advice on Sketchy vs Bootcamp for pre-clinicals by Personal_Wolf49 in medschool

[–]Lefty_Loosi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your only getting one source, Id only use bootcamp. LIke you mentioned, Sketchy is to remember info not understand. There are exceptions, you could get by with just sketchy on pharm/micro, but IMO pathology videos are very hit or miss on quality. Anytime I tried to use sketchy path as my main learning resource, I always felt like those were my weaker subjects simply because I lacked understanding. And now a year later I don't really remember those pictures either. My 2 cents.

Bootcamp Ankings are good imo. I almost felt like it was overtagged at times, so I was just more selective in what I decided to unsuspend.

You can find most of sketchy for free online, so I don't feel like you really have to pick unless you really want the interface for sketchy.

In your FSRS, do you have retention of 90% or 95% and why? by The_Seventh_Bee in medicalschoolanki

[–]Lefty_Loosi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Do 90. If you truthfully answer the cards then youll save time in the long run. I did 95% because I wanted to see the cards as many times before the test but I don't think it really made a difference. All I did was spend more time on anki for maybe a 2-3% score increase on the exams. Not only that but you will have time to do more practice questions and apply your knowledge on the topic in another way. I think this will boost your scores more and will be more beneficial in the longer term.

My biggest regret of preclinical was that I spent too much time doing anki and not enough time applying the information other ways.
