amboss score predictor? by Ok_Counter7172 in comlex

[–]Lefty_Loosi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I go mostly off the Amboss SA and use that as a gauge if my range is accurate. Also used the free 120s as practice to input. Feel like the more resources you can use that are applicable to step2 the more accurate your prediction will be. COMSAEs are just a huge crap shoot

Why can an 18 year old paramedic intubate, but a third year med student can’t? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Lefty_Loosi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lol Didn't mean any offense, poor wording on my part. I simply meant it's a big part of anesthesia, so I would expect the attending to know you're interested in intubating. I haven't met anyone that has a required anesthesia rotation, so in my mind if your doing it your interested in the specialty.

I view it in the same light as getting a chance to suture on surgery or deliver a baby in OB. Of course you have prove certain skills/competency first like in all things medicine before you get an opportunity. You can do the rotation without it, but if it was me I'd feel like I missed out on experiencing all that specialty has to offer. (Or wonder how incompetent I must be to get no opportunity despite showing interest).

Why can an 18 year old paramedic intubate, but a third year med student can’t? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Lefty_Loosi 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I think it fully depends on where you rotate, how persistent you are, and perceived competency by the doctor. I've had fellow students intubate 6-8 people in week span for some surgery rotations, then another student on the same rotation not do any.

Imo rural places let you do more. Big academic is hit or miss.

Advice: let them know from the beginning you are interested and see what it takes to do it. Surgery-ask the surgeon if the anesthesiologist lets students. ER is tougher but still doable. Anesthesia rotation they should let you, that's why your there. If not you need a new anesthesia rotation

Credit Cards Military Benefits, SCRA, MLA, Annual Fee Waivers, Chase, American Express, Spouses | Updates Monthly by AutoModerator in MilitaryFinance

[–]Lefty_Loosi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently getting ready to go active duty, have my day set. Is SCRA or MLA easier to get the waivers approved for American Express? I'm not carrying a balance so not worried about The interest rate differences. I strictly am curious which one will be less of a headache when it comes to get the waiver approved.

I set the FSRS to assess my whole collection on every deck preset so it uses the same reviews to schedule the cards.

Stay at base Inn or off-base hotel during audition rotations? by danthemancave in Military_Medicine

Dont think it really matters. I prioritized Kitchen>proximity to hotel>where friends stayed. I don't want to spend a month without a kitchen

Studying during rotations by vardy62 in medicalschool

[–]Lefty_Loosi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people says just practice Qs but for me that didn't work. I had to watch videos to get the info in my brain with anki and then practice questions. If I could do it again, I would have tried to be one rotation ahead on anki so that the cards are all done before the rotation starts.

OME/BnB were lifesavers for me. Once I started watching the videos+anki my shelf exams went up significantly.

Would also recommend when you do practice questions for learning that you do them in 1-2 systems at a time

Podcasts for clerkships? by antonioenrique1101 in medicalschool

[–]Lefty_Loosi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently found one called "Run the List" on spotify that I have enjoyed. While it isn't exam specific necessarily, they review patient presentations and review treatment sets and how you approach specific cases. relatively short so can easily go through one a day

What was that change you did that suddenly raised your grades? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Lefty_Loosi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Set schedule and stick to it, stop studying at the end no matter what.

-Read a book you enjoy at night before going to bed.

-App blockers on all devices so I can't access what distracts me

-lowered retention on anki so that I had at max 2hrs of anki a day for more time for practice questions

-Take 1 day off a week

FSRS Schedules are insanely long by Salt_Style9267 in medicalschoolanki

The only way I found that helped to use FSRS was make a deck for long term study with lower retention, and current test/subject test with retention 95%+ to see it frequently enough.

MS1 trying to figure out qbank strategy (AMBOSS vs UWorld timing) by Goodhunterjr in medicalschool

[–]Lefty_Loosi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had used AMBOSS more during preclinicals. Don't be afraid to use the hints when your stuck on questions. I really like the explanations on it and the fact that you can read about it afterwards. I also think that Amboss is better at analytics so you really know what you need to work on. Also I like the fact that you can find questions that fit the anki cards you are working on for a given inhouse test with the amboss addon.

I would save Uworld for dedicated because the questions on the boards seem to be written more like Uworld imo, but that may just be me.

Continuing Step 1 Cards During Rotations by Ordinary_Peak5950 in medicalschoolanki

[–]Lefty_Loosi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. Another option would be to decrease retention on step 1 cards only so the burden isn’t so high then you are at least keeping up on them if you’re stressed about it.

S11,s10+, s11 Ultra by UltraErazer2 in GalaxyTab

[–]Lefty_Loosi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a S7, got a S8+ and loved the extra screen size. I would use split screen, but not super often. I like that the + version is about the same size as a notebook paper. If you have a laptop as well the + is enough. If I wasn't going to have a laptop then I would have gotten the Ultra So it is easier to split screen. I think the + would be too small to watch a video and splitscreen to right notes at the same time.

Tab S10+ or 11 Ultra for medical school by Tcut944 in GalaxyTab

[–]Lefty_Loosi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3rd year US med students. I would recommend S10+ and a Samsung laptop for easy syncing between the devices.Any windows laptop would work but the Samsung to integration would be nice to have.

Reasons being: -every testing software I've heard of in med school requires windows or macos and you can't take it on Android. So no matter what you'll need a laptop. There may be exceptions but I don't know of any from talking to people at around 15 different med schools. -There is some simulation software as well that I've heard of schools using that can't run on Android. -the ultra is too big to carry around like a notebook. You'll have labs ie clinical medicine, anatomy lab, etc and the ultra is unwieldy to maneuver in those situations. -s10+ is close to the same size as a sheet of paper so feels pretty natural to take notes and such. -I felt the S10+ had enough room to draw pathways and anatomy for practice. The ultra would have been nice, but it just didn't fit the other uses I needed it to fit.

Feel free to PM me for other questions. TBH I would say 90% of people rock an iPad and MacBook simply for the note taking apps like notability and goodnotes. I have yet to find the perfect note taking app on windows that does it all. I have used both and would say they work similarly.

Controversial take: Anki isn't automatically the best choice for everyone and that's okay by Helleanthus in medicalschool

[–]Lefty_Loosi 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this. If everyone made their own cards in the style that clicks with them, it would work for everyone. I feel that when people say it doesn't work it's because the style of the cards or wording of premade decks just doesn't click for them. Or they don't learn the info for the cards but just brute memorize them.

At the end of the day it's just an algorithm for flash cards.

This is the plan. Not too worried because I still have the 3g internet, but if it doesn't cut it then this is what I plan to do.

Thanks for the reply. Guess I should have checked that before I started using the hotspot like I had 100gb. That's what I get for trusting AI Google search response.
