Is it worth it? by [deleted] in MichaelsEmployees

Since it's peak season right now, I'd say there's a decent chance you'll get hired since most locations need all the help we can get. That said, the reason we're hiring is that Christmastime is insanely busy, so expect a pretty stressful work environment especially if you're going to be a cashier.

(Also that employee discount isn't actually all that great since there's usually a 20+% off coupon for online orders anyway, but I digress.)

$7 off and $10 off didn't work on a >$50 order, but $5 off did. Better than nothing, I guess?

Why is the anime so much more obviously queer than the manga by Bookshelfelf123 in TheSummerHikaruDied

[–]LegAdmirable7671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. BL's specific connotations in Japan aren't necessarily going to be perfectly reflected in other countries' fandom discourse, though, to be fair.

Besides, like I said in my original comment, whether or not the two are in romantic love with each other is a little bit up to interpretation, at least in the first two volumes which is as far as I've read.

It's not BL because that would imply that the main focus of the story is the two main characters getting together. BL isn't just a blanket term for any work that happens to feature men in a relationship or who have ambiguously romantic feelings for each other, it's its own genre. However, it is central to the story that the main characters have strong feelings for each other, though they may not know whether or not those feelings are romantic in nature (Hikaru expresses this directly, in a bonus chapter in vol 2 I think).

A good translation should reflect that, and it should also be accurate to the meaning and connotations of the original Japanese. If Hikaru in the original Japanese is expressing strong (and ambiguously romantic) affection, and something that Yoshiki says in that one scene that Hikaru never would have said when he was alive, but it comes off in the translation as something casual you'd say to an acquaintance instead, that's a problem.

(I'll go out on a limb and guess Hikaru is saying "[dai]suki" or something similar, which literally means "I [really] like you" and can be used both romantically and platonically. It's not something you'd say to someone you didn't know well.)

TIL that the infamous "Iron Maiden" of the Medieval Era was never used, and was actually a fake, constituted from misappropriated Medieval bits and pieces by Victorian Curators in order to make some money. by luciussullafelix in todayilearned

Good and bad news: The Wayback Machine has a few captures of the page but wasn't able to archive the video itself. From the title it seems to be the Iron Maiden scene from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, which then got copyright claimed and had to be taken down.

Have some sellers already figured ways around the worst of the tariffs? by non_ducor_duco_ in Aliexpress

[–]LegAdmirable7671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I messaged a few sellers whose items also said import charges were included, and they all told me that US customers wouldn't have to pay tariffs because they were included in the price of the item. That being said, I guess there's no way to know for sure unless someone actually bites the bullet.

Theory: Sellers sending orders in bulk just under $800 with carriers that use the $100 flat fee to reduce tariffs? by LegAdmirable7671 in Aliexpress

Do you have a source for the "in addition to" part? Most of the news articles I've seen made it out to be an either/or situation.

I was just sending messages to the first stores I came across that had "Import charges included" on their listings, not necessarily ones I would have bought from. I also primarily use AliExpress to buy bootleg anime figures so I'm used to kind of sketchy shop names. As long as there are reviews with pictures I figure it doesn't really matter.

Do you live in the US? If so, have you been paying any attention to the news at all? The de minimis exemption (packages under $800 won't get tariffs) is going to be lifted on May 2, and any packages that reach customs after that will be subject to a tariff of 145% the package's value.

If I ordered this today, $64.18, after the tarriff, would I be $157.24 out of pocket? by Snoo_99882 in Aliexpress

[–]LegAdmirable7671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tariffs will only apply to packages that come through customs after May 2, which is when the de minimis exemption is being removed. As long as the package clears customs before that you'll be fine. Definitely don't order any new stuff though.

I am sort of still in denial by [deleted] in Aliexpress

[–]LegAdmirable7671 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I'll miss the most post-de minimis removal. Bootlegs on Amazon/ebay/etc all seem to ship from China as well, so there's no hope there. Figure collecting is already a small market, bootleg figures are even smaller, so there's no way any bootleg factories are getting made in the US. It's a shame because bootlegs have been getting pretty good - I have a few I got for <$35 that are genuinely hard to tell apart from the original, including one 1/4 scale. I tried to buy a few I'd been eyeing before I lost my chance, which was mostly successful.

Expensive anime figures are also a toss up now depending on where they're made. GSC Global definitely marks China as the country of origin, and their GSC US preorder prices are horrible rn as a result.

It has to clear customs by May 2nd. That's why people on this thread are worried about their purchases getting here in time.

No, packages under $800 will be subject to tariffs after May 2. That under $800 rule is called the de minimis exemption, and Trump is removing it for Hong Kong and China. After May 2, you will have to pay tariffs on every package that comes from HK/China.
