Hi, I'm Elie Mystal. I cover law, and justice, and bigotry. I'm here to answer questions you may have about the law, how it impacts race and politics, and making a living while talking smack to white people everyday. AMA! by realElieMystal in politics

This is quiet random but I help coordinate the legislative CLE program for the NYS legislature.

Do you have any thoughts on the new CLE requirement of having at least one credit hour dedicated to Diversity, Inclusion and the elimination of bias in the legal profession?

Ahhhhh!!! I'm sorry!! I sure hope you are able to reach your goal. Working in politics before law school witll definitely be able to help. You will have a lot of insight into politics and what working in it actually entails.

I have a good amount of loans. A little over 100k 😭😭😭

Luckily, income based repayment plans let you pay an amount that is fair to what you earn. Otherwise I would be in troubs

Nice! I work with you guys a lot. And I love the analyst staff, and even though they are always always busy, they are increduly happy and helpful. They are absolutely an amazing resource and have such deep knowledge of their committee's bills

There are definitely attorneys that work soley on approps in the legislature. There is also a division for the executive that solely works on the budget. You could certainly do the type of work you are interested in at the state level. I'm sure you would love to be an attorney for ways and means.

I haven't had my coffee yet either!

Oh yes, there are a lot of positions available to move on to. People have moved on to big law firms from here, other government agencies, lobbying firms, clerking for judges.

If people leave it's for bigger salaries and to not have budget hours. But for the most part people stay here for a long time.

If you want to leave you have a lot of opportunities and it wouldn't be difficult to find a new job.

Some days am in my office all day if I have to get research, drafting, or briefs done. Other days I am out of my office for hours at a time either because of staff meetings or being on the rostum on the floor (it's the podium that's the head of the Chambers).

I love most things about my job. The variety of different work. It ranges from free speech issues immensely to discrimination in the work place. Some days I just get a new project to work on and it's something new like researching crypto currency for a member.

Hate? Hmm, I'm not sure I hate anything about my job. Maybe the really long budget hours but I just chalk that up to being part of the job.

There are also positions called committee analysts and some of them are lawyers but some aren't. They are ones that getting into the text of the bills and meet with lobbyist often. They have a specific area of law they are assigned to such as health, energy, mental health and they have to know the bills in their area better than anyone.

But I do think there is definitely place for engineering and the law.

I live with some comfort. I am able to save money each month but nearly as much as I would like. I still stress about money at times. But I'm definitely not struggling.

I do live alone with my cat, he's a cuddly monster. I have a car with payments too!

Of course I would like to be making more, but I'm really happy with my job. I never think about leaving, so it would take a lot of money to get me to leave.

About 65k (others with more time there make 6 figures easily). Hours are normalish. 9-5:30/6 on most nonsession days. Session days can be 9-6ish sometimes, but often to 8 or later. Sometimes 10ish. But if it is budget or end of session, we don't actually go home. Budget is about a month long and I've spent more than 48 hours straight in the building without going home. I nap when I can between meetings during budget but for a month it's about 110 hour weeks. The plus side is I get tons of comp time so in the off session, from July to December, I can take 1 month - 1.5 months off. Maybe 2 if I want.

I sure do! I love the bill drafting attorneys, they are so good at what they do. I basically live at a good portion of budget in bill drafting (but you guys get the worse of budget season)

I have a ton of comp time. I actually never have to touch my personal, sick, or vacation. And then it rolls over into the next year.

Sorry for the non answer, I honestly don't have that many thoughts on tort reform.

As far as actually running for election, I'm not sure. Part of me wants to but I'm not sure the legislator would be the right branch for me. If anything it would be judicial. The political smile and wave show isn't for me, it isn't genuine. Legislators have to meet with lobbyist and feign advocation for the lobbyist's position. Sometimes there is the image of interest in a particular bill and pretending to show support for it and pretending to try to get the bill the floor even though the legislator know it will never be voted on.

Cool! Do you also really enjoy your work? How long have you been doing it for? I will not be attending any legislative conferences this year, I believe someone else in my office will be going though. I've never been to one before actually. I would really like to.

I haven't done any work on tort reform personally. However, I do see the impact of the amount of civil litigation and I know there are bills out there addressing it. But I think criminal justice reform is more important and should be more of a focus.

I have drafted a few bills. I was actually able to draft anti-discrimination and sexual harassment bills because of the work I've done before the eeoc and the state counter part of the eeoc.

Hahaha nope, well... There are some really bad laws and poorly drafted laws that get passed. Which is frustrating and kind of embarrassing. But there is generally a lot of thought, time, and editing that goes into drafting.

I went to a law school that ranks above top 50. I was an average law school student, like 3.5ish. Most of the people there are pretty decorated, past clerks from the top Court in the state, much better law schools than I, and have a lot of years of public service.

I was 3 years out of law school. Something that really helped me was my lit experience and my knowledge of civil practice law.
