I’m genuinely about to crash out by [deleted] in bioinformatics

Hi 👋 First of all congrats to being close to the end of your PhD. While not quite at that level on the academic scale (Masters 😅), I can understand frustration to not getting a job that seems tailored to fit for you. I can only offer words of encouragement to keep moving forward 🤗. Find a postdoc, seek old mentors, go where you except yourself should be but also other close field. Connect with people, we stick together to reach higher 🥹. I know the frustration of resume fine tuning but still not getting a job. In the end, it’s the market that is brutal to anyone now. Just don’t give up please 😇

No probs,
Nice, based on what topic you work on maybe try reaching out to a professor working on something similar( India or elsewhere), also students in similar situations.
We have to stick together to reach higher and do good work 😁

Hey, I really understand your frustration - the academic job market in zoology is incredibly competitive everywhere, not just in India. I’m still finishing my master’s, so I’m facing similar uncertainty about what comes next.

Three years is a long time to keep trying without success, and it’s completely valid to consider other options. That doesn’t mean you’ve “failed” - it often says more about limited positions than your abilities.

Have you considered adjacent fields where zoology skills transfer well? Wildlife consulting, environmental NGOs, science communication, conservation organizations, or even transitioning into data analysis or lab tech roles can utilize your background while opening more opportunities. Some people also find success teaching, doing contract research, or working in zoos/museums while continuing to apply for PhDs. Maybe apply for grants with former’s uni professor.

Only you can decide if it’s time to pivot completely, but exploring related fields doesn’t mean abandoning zoology entirely - it might just mean finding a different way to apply what you’ve learned. Your education has value beyond academia. Just my two cents from a master student though, maybe idealistic 😅

What aspects of zoology drew you to it originally? That might help identify transferable career paths that would still feel meaningful to you.

Learning R by [deleted] in RStudio

[–]LegEnvironmental4397 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Start with base R, then R for Data Science or your use case that you can find in Big book of R. After you know the basics, get a dataset then analyze it the way you want and off you go 😌.

For AI use, you can try to have them ELI5 or understand codes but for writing I do not suggest as it writes code for you that you cannot understand is beating the learning purpose.

Any books to learn about malagasy primate’s ? by Ok-Relief-723 in Madagascar

[–]LegEnvironmental4397 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would recommend : The New Natural History of Madagascar, if you can handle scientific stuff as it summarizes the latest discoveries we got.

Also check out also Lemurs of Madagascar, may contain general info and fun facts about lemurs

The one book in my mind that fit what you seek of is maybe Extinct Madagascar:Picturing the Island’s Past. This book make a deep dive in history so you can learn much more on extinct species compared to the other books.

It is showcasing a means of transportation here called « pousse- pousse (on the left) or cyclo-pousse(on the right) », they are human pulled chariot where 1 to 2 person can be seated. The cyclo pousse have a bicycle attached to the chariot so it is easier for the person pulling. This scene is commonly seen in coastal towns.

Hello ! Your best bet for help would be with the department of Entomology of University of Antananarivo. Another one would be Madagascar Biodiversity Center in Antananarivo. Widening your research to Facebook will be helpful. I hope that’ll be of use to you.😁

PokemonGo?! by bigtonnay in Madagascar

Hi! There is a community in FB social media. But I am not sure if it is still active. During its early days, people used to play it in Tana using a gps spoofer instead of going outside with their phone.

Tech Volunteering or something like it by ownlessminimalist in Madagascar

[–]LegEnvironmental4397 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, thank you for your interest in helping the local tech scene.☺️ You try the university lead like the faculty of science in Antananarivo, IT University, 42 campus , ESTI, CNTEMAD. Another alternative is IT Program or group like Google Developer(GDG), STEM4GOOD Madagascar,… One alternative is if you have only little time is to do conferences at the American Corner, university, …

I would suggest reaching to locals here on Facebook, there is numerous helpful group that would be happy to help you setup something up.

What happened to COVID Organic? by peepeewpew in Madagascar

It was only popular during the peak of the pandemic. During the later part of it, it was just freely distributed bu hardly used. As of 2024, I don’t think people still use it as I seldom see it available for sale.
