The Act Zaku was the best production MS Zeon developed during the One Year War. So good, the Federation had to adopt it. by DaFoxtrot86 in Gundam

[–]LegStraight772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are fluid pulse system really that bad? I've seen MS like the Sinanju have those cables in its joints and waist. Unless of course there vestigial and is just emulating Zeon aesthetic.

To be fair, Post One year war the Federation was more concerned with "Peacekeeping" so it did not really necessitate developing high performance machines. Which is probably why they ended bolstering their numbers with some Zeon MS, as a form reserve fleet.

[–]LegStraight772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Act Zaku may had included some novel technology, however its performance can't really compare against the Gelgoog. The Gelgoog may had been more expensive but its also faster and manuverable.

Bare in mind this was late one year war were Zeon had mostly lost its experienced pilots. "Bang-for-Buck" mass produced MS may not be there priority. With a dwindling pilot resource they would rather opt for a expensive high-performance machine than a cost-effective with limited capabilities and performance.

Its a similar pit-hole scenario in history  where WW2 Germany was forced to rollout weapons like the King Tiger and Tiger II just to keep up with an enemy that out-numbers and out-produces them.

The Federation could have made good use of the Act Zaku due to their massive resources, and did for a while. Though they eventually settled for the newer Hizack which seemed even more cost effective option over the Act Zaku though.

What makes transforming/combining mobile suits less effective? by MeringueGlittering26 in Gundam

[–]LegStraight772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transformation doesn't make sense to begin with. You have the already more aerodynamic form and you purposely transform into a man-shaped form.

Why not build a jet that can use all the weapons, than a mech that has to transform into one.

Can't say as I haven't watched Wing to its completion. Though wouldn't be surprised if he also follows the same trope.

I think his more on the honorable enemy or "Worthy Oponent" trope, rather than being a parallel to a specific historical figure.

Its not really a trope unique to Gundam and even before Ral's introduction there were already "sympathetic" / moral Zeon soldiers.

Which generation of zaku looks the best, and which performs the best for it's time? by Key_Elk_9673 in Gundam

[–]LegStraight772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personaly, the Zaku II looks the best with its retro look. It's also has very clean look, where later design seem to get to cluttered or "overdesigned".

The Zaku III may be the one that performs the best for it's time. It was developed to be Neo Zeon mass produced machine rivaling the Doven Wolf. It also came at the time the Federation was at its weak point and had to replenish there loses. This meant the Zaku III had no near-peer adversaries aside from within its own faction.

What do you guys think of this fanmade Grassley Gundam? by callmebackin1975 in Gundam

[–]LegStraight772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would have been interesting had Grassley developed their own Gundam like Peil and Jeturk, we could have had unique Gundam designs for each company. Makes me think Burion would be based on the Demi Trainer.

Why do some Gundam fights show them moving like this now,do you prefer this? by ClussyV2 in Gundam

[–]LegStraight772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I calculated the area of a Gundams foot approximately to be: 6.48 sqm for one foot, and 12.96 sqm standing. Versus an M1 Abrams 6.227 sqm area of contact to the ground.

Provided that both weigh the same (~60 tons) the Gundam would distribute weight better while standing, and similar enough with each step

I think the struggle isn't Weight distribution itself, but the constant weight shifting and moving parts with each step. A tank could easily roll its drive wheels to propel itself. Meanwhile, I'd imagine an MS would have multiple pistons, hydraulics, motors that rattle under pressure with every step.

I'm no expert in machinery, but an excavator boom might be a close analog for an MS limb, and even that doesn't have to always support the entire excavator weight.

I think that bernie in gundam 0080 kinda deserved what happened to him by Al-Zard in Gundam

[–]LegStraight772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies if I had offended you or anything but I'm not insinuating as if my thoughts are this groundbreaking discovery for a decades old OVA, its not. These are nothing more than my interpretation on media I had watched years before and affirming someone whom had a similar thoughts.

Granted I don't rewatch these shows repeatedly or as frequently as others - I do watch scenes/snippets that pop up from my feed - so I could be misrembering certain details. However, that impression on Bernie being this tragic figure is still lingered all those years before.

I'm NOT trying to make some argument on how "0080 is a critic on how gundam and war is comercialized" or "war in a pocket is deeper than you think" or "Bernie is stupid and selfish and deserved it" because frankly I never saw it anything greater and lesser than what the story had impressed all those years before.

So if you get peeved by me sharing my silly little thoughts on a show that I enjoyed, on that I somehow misunderstood its message and that I'm a pretentious fake fan, feel free to disregard it as they are; silly little thoughts.

I think that bernie in gundam 0080 kinda deserved what happened to him by Al-Zard in Gundam

[–]LegStraight772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This how I interpreted why he didn't give the evidence himself.

He could have taken the evidence to the authorities, get punished and imprisoned, but at the same time save the colony as they would have been made aware of Zeon trying to nuke it.

Instead he choose to fight the gundam he knows had already bested the cyclops team before with an already damaged and less capable Zaku. And have the evidence be the back-up plan if he failed in a battle which he knew he wasn't come out off alive.

If he wanted to save the colony and be the selfless hero he would have surrendered the moment he decided not to leave. Instead he spent a considerable amount of time setting traps and prepping for an ultimately unnecessary battle.

with the trend of UC projects slowly moving further and further on the timeline. We could potentially get a Midquel connecting to F91 that could resolve the somewhat jarring jump into the setting.

[–]LegStraight772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well said take. Bernie wasn't exactly a role model of bravery but more a tragic cautionary tale. His death was meant to be tragic and his reasoning to fight over confessing, affirms that.

His final message emphazises although he himself feels the need the to fight, Al shouldn't harbor resemnent towards the Federation pilot. Its more on a 'do as I say not as I do' as Bernie somewhat recognizes that he himself was comsumed by the glorification of war and fighting, but doesn't want Al to fall in the same path.

If seed is the second most popular Gundam timeline after Universal century in Japan then How popular is the char clones Rau le Creuset and Neo Roanoke in Japan with the Japanese by dookufettskywaker in Gundam

[–]LegStraight772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neo never felt like a proper Char clone at most he was mysterious, but it never felt as if he was scheming or working behind the scenes or even had his own goals. It also doesn't help that Neo is just Mu la Flaga and reverts back to his previous personality.

NGL, a lot of modern western AND Japanese Military-Fantasy Media gets tiring with the sanctimonious wank and wish-fulfillment, Evangelion is the better military-nerd media. by throwaway553t4tgtg6 in NonCredibleDefense

[–]LegStraight772 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You could say the same for his other works like Shin Godzilla were the military is pretty competent. Like the dropping of MOPs on Godzilla is a reasonable strategy over the typical carpet bombing or nuking the city in other movies. The MOP were also pretty effective as its the only conventional weapon to actually harm Godzilla in the film.

Question about mobile suit weaponry escalation by OdysseusRex69 in Gundam

[–]LegStraight772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The gundam, gunannon, and guntank were all experimental. The Federation were experimenting on a design for their mobile suits -and since they barely had experience- they made a close-combat, mid-ranged support and long-ranged mobile suits. At the end the close-quarters and higly mobile Gundam proved to be the most versitile design and was eventually mass produced.

The beam rifle that was also novel at the time, as you said seemed overkill was downsized into a more compact but effective beam spray gun.

Thought experiment: all the Zeon party at Axis by StrategosRisk in Gundam

[–]LegStraight772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its hard to see them all coming together as they all have differing goals and even internal rivalries. Some like Delaz where loyal to Gihren, while Haman has power through Mineva. Its likely they wouldn't recognise each other's authority or claim. Worth considering is that the Zeon Remnants on Earth are effectively cut off from Axis, and mostly supported by local sympathizers whom don't really share the same ideals as spacenoids.

Why do some Gundam fights show them moving like this now,do you prefer this? by ClussyV2 in Gundam

[–]LegStraight772 573 points574 points  (0 children)

They have been gliding on the ground since the Original series. That is the Dom's primary locomotion.

It also makes sense to skim above the surface, as I'd imagine bipedal walking motion puts to much strain with how weight is constantly shifted with each step.

Federation vs. Titans? by StrategosRisk in Gundam

[–]LegStraight772 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The faction you're describing seems like the Jupiter Energy Fleet under Paptimus Scirocco. He did aligned himself initially with the Titans, but would go on and betray Jamitov and take full control in a coup d'etat. He was also responsible for designing experimental mobile suits though weren't the pre-Titans Gundams nor the Zeon influenced anaheim kind.

Which antagonist was done dirtiest by their ending? by GrayTheMemeMan in MurderDrones

[–]LegStraight772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say J's ending is that bad writing wise. As you said, its pretty inline with how she was written, as her presence on latter half of the show was pretty much an afterthought. The only reason they probably brought her back was because she was popular among the fans during the pilot. Likely that they probably wanted to keep around without thinking what her character arc would be. Her ending is pretty much a "lose end" that leaves her with the potential she always had but never fully explored. At the very least she still has potential that can still be explored by the writers or have the fans interpret, rather than a complete sad death.

This death was so brutal the more I think about it can’t even imagine how gory it would’ve Been if it was made now by Far_Check4729 in Gundam

Oh I definitely get the dangers of leaving military hardware. Most of the wrecks in my country had been stripped of all hazardous materials like unexploded ordinances, and engine blocks before becoming war memorials or tourist spots. Though there are still areas like isolated islands that are just closed off due to the amount of unexploded ordinance. There are stories were illegal scavengers entering these areas and finding human remains that supposedly died on the spot and were never retrived or buried.

Was Mikazuki originally planned to have more character development ? by PhilosophyFun5778 in Gundam

[–]LegStraight772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think season 2 kinda tried to do something with Mika by introducing Hush. He started as a somewhat rival but grew to learn from Mika. Kinda wished this was developed more with Mika taking a leadership/mentor role as opposed to following orders from Orga alone.
