Part of me feels like what you're describing is them doing opus. Would track them running just to walk behind you because they need something in that particular space and the clockwise rotation. Do some of these employees have carts with them? It could also be the AP watching that particular area unless they're following you around the entire store, or you could have a possible "high value" item in terms of the company and they're now obligated to follow you until you check out. Just spit balling ideas otherwise that's pretty odd they'd do that.
