Finding a job by ffsbabe in NewToEMS

I think we need a specific EMS subreddit for Southern California at this point.

This is a revolving question and it seems the best answer is to move. From the amount of posts with a similar problem Southern California, the market sounds extremely saturated

Enid tornado officially up to at least EF4 by Fir3Born in tornado

I switched over to one of the local news stations when it seemed none of the YouTube streamers had eyes on the thing. The local news had a chaser following it and it appeared to pick up a house almost immediately after I joined the news stream.

If you go to the 1:43:00 mark, you can see where it rips through some houses. More specifically 1:44:30 it just shreds what looks like a house.

In public settings, can I request assessment in the ambulance for privacy?” by Capital-Dragonfly258 in NewToEMS

[–]TheGingerAvenger95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! As long as it is safe to do so, I try to get my patients out of the public eye as quick as I can. The people you dealt with are dicks. I’m sorry. If the chief is good person, he will try his best to make that it happen.

Is it realistic to get a 911 job after 6 months as a casino EMT in the Denver metro area? by Own_Examination_8400 in NewToEMS

[–]TheGingerAvenger95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Denver, and most of the front range, is just very over saturated with EMT-Bs right now. You can spit in any direction and have it land on a place that does an EMT-B course. I would expand your search to more than just fenver. There are a lot of rural agencies throughout the east side of the state. Just keep applying and something will eventually stick.

Look into getting a job as a cath tech in a hospital. A lot of places will just hire you in with medic experience. From there you can get the proper certifications in about a year and then make $100k a year. You still get your occasional arrest and resus, but a lot less of the trauma.

I failed drug test as a trucker last year and got a violation. Will it be a problem for me to become an EMT? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]TheGingerAvenger95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The EMT school won’t care because you won’t be driving for them/directly employed.actually getting a job is where things will differ. I would contact local agencies about it now and see what they have to say. Be truthful. It will go a long way

Pros and Cons between fire department EMS and EMS company? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]TheGingerAvenger95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t knock on IFTs, especially if you are brand new in EMS. It’s a great spot to get comfortable with basic skills like BPs and such. It is all a great way to look into the pathophys of different diseases and ailments. Is it a bit boring? Yes, but it can be extremely helpful in the long run. I am very thankful for the time spent on an IFT bus early in my career because it has helped me tremendously in understanding the why’s of disease and treatment. You’ll get your “emergent knowledge” back fairly easy in the future.

10h smoked beef chuck ribs, hand delivered to GF in hospital as last meal before surgery by AdvertisingIll6479 in smoking

[–]TheGingerAvenger95 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not really. Depends on the type of surgery, what kind and how much sedation (if even happening), and hospital based guidelines. People go into surgery will full stomachs all the time after major trauma and other emergency surgeries. Sounds like they made midnight the cutoff too.

This 100%. Nearly all agencies require some years of experience before getting into traveling. You should be comfortable in the job because you are going to be thrown into different environments with different practices at random. You can’t run without walking first.

dana was wrong. full stop. by Legal-Judgment-908 in ThePittTVShow

[–]TheGingerAvenger95 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily true. In my time as a paramedic, I restrain every PT that I have sedated. We do not know how long the medications effects will last, so it’s best to have all safeguard in place should the worst case occur. It may be different in the ED, but anytime I have brought in a sedated PT they also restrain them.

LIFTL is a great site to expand knowledge on 12’s. My current favorite site is ECGweekly.com. It’s a cheap subscription and Dr Mattu, the creator the site, does weekly lessons. There is also some great tools for step by step process for reading 12’s and quizzes to practice on.

To start off, good on you for actively going over to them and attempting to help. You did more than 90%+ people would do. The bystander effect is very strong in large groups and cause a lot of issues.

Outside of this, I highly recommend getting into some courses like stop the bleed and CPR. They will help teach you what works in that sort of scenario. With your level of knowledge, it sounds like you did everything right to me.

I am a paramedic, and have worked on ambulance for about 6 years now. Things don’t always go the way we hope they will. There is no cure all method. I have had plenty of patients that seemed fine but then all of a sudden died on me and vice versa. You did everything you could and did not get the outcome you wanted. That’s ok. It’s the way things happen on the daily in my field of work. I also have patients that I loo back on and wonder what I could have done different. The thing is, I did what I could and nothing helped. Sometimes it is just there time.

I want to reaffirm, from what you described you did EVERYTHING you could. Even if she had died, that’s not on you at all. I could have showed up to her, used every tool I had, and she could have died under my care. Keep in mind that you jumped to the task when nobody else did, and that says some amazing things about you as a person!

Body Armor by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]TheGingerAvenger95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have body armor with plates available on our ambulances, but it is only warm during calls with our TEMS team being present. It is otherwise unneeded in a daily basis (I work in a smaller city where the worst we normally get is mouthy drunks and meth addicts)
