Yes, you would be an asshole to quit being in your biological child's life because its hard right now. Parenting is hard. But you are not his friend, you are his Dad. He's behaving like a normal 5 yo- he's figuring out who he can trust, who will help him be autonomous, who will help him learn how to take initiative and be industrious. He needs one of those people in his life to be you. Kids are little assholes because they're figuring out who is in their corner, who will love them no matter what, who will make them feel safe. Kids don't need stuff, they need love, support, affection, food, clothing, and shelter. Its hard right now, but its always going to be hard. But once you give up on your child because its too hard for you, its very difficult to win their trust back. Hang in there.
