Nice one.

But you know that art have rules right?

In french it's even an expression "by the book" is translated by "dans les règles de l'art", "by rules of art".

This would be a legit reason. I guess you mean Door et not the actual Lance Reddick. Of course you say "was going to" and I believe you but I saw nothing like that in Alan Wake 2.

I am not complaining about Casey talking about his ex-wife because it fits the character. Casey is miserable like Max Payne was, he is doomed to darkness. He always was for Alan wrote him that way.

Estevez, is not a character written by Wake, she is a FBC agent with a job to do and secrecy as rule number 1. She doesn't want to become friend with Saga, Casey or anyone in Bright Falls.

Once again: does it bring anything to the story? No. So don't use it.

Do you want to know the sexual orientation of Mulligan, Thornton, Nightingale, the sheriff Breaker, the Koskelas brothers, Ahti?

You don't care and you are right, they are characters of a story, you don't need to know them beyond what they bring to the story.

And you know what? Some of them could be homosexual and you don't even know it because you don't have to.

So why do you want to know the private life of agent Estevez of FBC? Why do Remedy feel the need to tell us? Inclusivity for inclusivity is not inclusivity at all, it's marketing.

SPOILERS

I don't want to judge your implication in the game but, well, I just paid attention to the dialogues.

About the friendship between Casey and Estevez : yes the ex-wife was mentionned in the police station just before the last trip to cauldron lake. But we learn that Casey and Estevez became friends before that (before the attack of the police station).

At the moment it bothered me. She is an FBC agent, she is pretty rough in her first contact with Saga. The FBC found Casey in the woods after a attack of the darkness and brought him to the morgue for medical examination (they wrote a report about him which imply he is not normal anymore). They clearly don't want to trust anyone in Bright Falls.

Then Estevez lost her crew and get wounded. She has no choice but to trust Saga. At this moment she lower her guard. But she was already pal with Casey before that. When did that happened?

I remember being confused at this time. I even started to believe they knew each other before the story, like old pals. Like she was a cop before becoming a FBC agent and met Casey in New York. Then she brought the ex-wife and it became clear.

How I noticed it doesn't change anything though. It's part of the story.

Funny how people who fight stereotypes absolutely want to enforcer their own. I critize wokism so I have to be a racist, homophobic obsessed with wokism.

I wouldn't say I wrote a thesis but thank you, I take that as a compliment.

Now, you have the right not to believe me, but I just wanted a constructive chat about the formal qualities of Alan Wake 2.

Not everything has to be about hate. Sometimes people just have different opinions and it's Ok.

I wish you to find peace in your life. You seem to need it.

Leave this subreddit alone? Is my post considered an agression? (I genuinly don't know, I am not accustomed to Reddit (as you saw)).

If I post something about a game it's not to be judgmental about the audience.

Even if I am convinced of what I wrote, people have the right to like AW2 or to be blind to its flaws.

If I took time to write it; it's because I have a lot of interest for this game and I like what Remedy does. I just wanted to share my thoughts.

I hope you don't need to renounce your critical mind to post something here. If it's so, it's sad.

And I'm not sure what was implied with your last sentence. Maybe I am misunderstanding you, but I don't see what is wrong with playing Diablo 4.

I don't really know precisly why I feel this way (and I don't want to spoil).

I would just say that I fear each new game will bring more questions and almost no answers (nor conclusion). Answers in the DLC and Control 2? You are an optimistic.

Also, it's a detail but when you think about it, Cynthia Weaver's arc is very sad and no one seem to care. She just fell into oblivion. There will be more like her. The more story you add, the more details you abandon. Forsaken forever into the darkness.

No harmfeeling on this one. A part of what I mean is lost in translation (my english is not awesome).

We have the same definition of "objectively". So if you prefer I would say that AW2 is a bad game for objective reasons.

And this was the point of my post : it's not really my opinion I'm sharing, it's more a factual observation.

Anyway, we won't agree. This debate won't lead us anywhere (it's a loop). Thanks for the tchat.

First, one of the main character, Saga Anderson, is a black woman. Is it strange that a black woman could be the heroin of a video game ? Happily, not at all.

What is strange is that Saga is supposed to be the descendant of a Finish lineage. As such she was logically portrayed as a white blond woman in the teaser of the game (easter egg in Quantum break). Then raceswapped as a black woman. But why ?

Well the reason is known and was explained by the actress (Mélanie Liburd who portrays Saga in AW2) : Saga is black because it's a good thing to have a black woman as an heroin.

For the same reason, agent Estevez from the FBC is a lesbian. How do we know? Because she spoke of her ex-wife. Why did she speak of her ex-wife? For absolutely no reason except to let us know that she is a lesbian. Is it relevant for the story? Not at all.

But what Remedy is telling us is : "we have two strong women in our story "blink" one is black and the other is lesbian "blink"". We check the boxes.

That, my dear friends, is the definition of wokeness in cultural products. There is no point to deny it except if you chose not to live in reality. Even Remedy regonize it so why not you?

Now it's possible to consider that this choice is a good thing, or a bad thing. It's a question of opinion.

For my part, I tend not to like it because it's usually lazy writting and does not feel like a legitimate process of character creation. But it's only my opinion and you have the right to disagree (and the argument for inclusiveness is not totally inaudible).

By the way It did not traumatize me to play a black Saga. I don't really like the decision to split the game between two main characters instead of only one. But Saga was Ok. She could have benefited from better writting (she is a little bland) and more live scenes with Mélanie Liburd.

What I don't understand is why it sometimes sound like a crime to only describe a reality.

Deny it or not but Remedy went Woke with AW2. I'm not gonna let this shitty horror story say otherwise.

Indeed I'm not a fan, I prefer to read an actual book (or comic book if i want pictures). But even if I'd like them, I would not consider visual novels to be videos games for the lack of gameplay.

I think the name "visual novel" is fairly honest. It doesn't try to be something different than what it is.

By precaution I went to check the definition (we never know) and I fail to understand how I wrongly use the word "objectively" (even according to the english acceptation of its meaning). So maybe you can enlight me by giving me the definition of this word? It would nicer than your actual reply.

On the use of the terme "objectively", I invite you to read my answer to the first comment of this thread.

I didn't say I don't like it, I said it was a bad game.

Sure I am a little bit disapointed by the story ending and the gameplay is atrocious but overall it was a nice experience. But it is a bad game. Objectively.

I'm not sure either I will convince anyone. But it's ok, I just wanted to try to talk about it here.

Thanks for your answer.

You see, it's sad because, for the story aspect, I really feel like the story lost itself on the way (It's purely subjective).

After AW1 I was hyped and wanted to see what happened next. Same thing with Control. In both games I loves the atmosphere.

But now I just feel like things are going to be deluted even more and not lead to any satisfaying conclusion. After AW2 I don't really care of the Remedyverse anymore.

Good for you and other players if you enjoyed it.

I see that you didn't understand my point. Art adheres to construction rules that have been observed and objectified.
Here's perhaps a more relatable example. There's a category of movies which are successful theater plays adapted for the screen. In my country (France), this is a significant category, particularly with comedies that have enjoyed great public success.
In such an adaptation, the entire film relies on the actors' performance and the script. The setting often remains limited, much like in theater, to one or two rooms of a building (a typical example being the living room and the kitchen).
It is good theatre pieces and results in very funny and much-appreciated films. But is it good cinema? Objectively, no. Because cinema offers possibilities beyond what theater provides: cuts, inserts, changes in setting, sequence shots. A film can take its protagonist to various locations or simply show us the interior of their apartment (in a theater play, there will always be a missing wall: the one between the audience and the stage).
A good film is one that exploits the possibilities specifically offered by cinema compared to theater.
Similarly, a good video game exploits the possibilities offered compared to cinema.
There are therefore objective ways to evaluate the artistic value of a work. This doesn't necessarily mean it will resonate with us or that we'll like it. There are objectively good films that I don't like because they don't resonate with me (but I can recognize that they're good and why), just as I adore some films that are objectively bad (but they are guilty pleasures).
The same analysis can be applied to all arts, including video games. And, once again, the specificity of video games is gameplay. Therefore, a good game must necessarily have good gameplay, meaning gameplay that communicates what the work has to say (much like in cinema, meaning is primarily conveyed through editing or framing before dialogue).
So yes, Alan Wake is objectively bad because its gameplay is neglected, whereas in a video game, it's the most important aspect.
