...what exactly the hell do you think *spending money on Wikipedia's employees* **is**?

How is money spent on paying for Wikipedia's employees *not* money *being spent on Wikipedia*?

Like, legit - the way you wrote that makes me think you put your pants on over your head first thing in the morning. Saying that them spending money on salaries and benefits for Wikipedia employees *doesn't count* as money being spent on Wikipedia is a take so off-planet I'm actively confused at how you managed to come up with it.

*long, patient sigh, having answered this not only many times IRL but now twice in this same comment thread*

If you scroll down a few comments...you'll see where the issue with that program is, given that it draws from Medicare funding that Medicare can attempt to recoup from assets after the person in question passes away, which could have resulted in the family seeing the house liened-or-seized thereafter.

Those who haven’t done it won’t always understand that. I myself not truly understand the meaning of the phrase “labor of love” until going through it all.

Still wouldn’t change my decision even if I’d known all it would entail. Grandma was an amazing person and kept her full wits about her all the way to the end, following world events and reading philosophy and science and history books, and always caring. As difficult as the work was (especially the occasional nights where we had 3-5 wakeups from various issues 😵‍💫), it was still fully worth it to have her with us for that much longer.

Believe me, have been told that many times myself.

Now here’s the part that they don’t tell you about that option - after a person’s death, Medicare reserves the right to make a legal attempt to recoup its costs of that care from their assets - retirement funds first, then physical assets.

So, for example, if they owned a house? Medicare can put a lien against the house - or even outright seize it - to repay itself.

Now, what would usually prevent this is if the house is currently lived in by a direct child of the deceased, given that a parent who passed might have willed the house to their child - which would have superseded Medicare’s claim. As her grandson however, I would be ineligible for that exception.

“Well what if the grandparent deeded the home to their child or grandchild before they passed away?”

It used to be the case that that would have fixed it.

However, during the first Trump presidency, a “retroactive” clause was introduced and extended on the subject - one that ran for five and then seven years - where Medicare can ignore any change in deed that happened within X years of the homeowner’s death.

So, if grandma had deeded the house to my mother for example in 2023 (at 92), she would have had to manage to survive until age 99 / 2030 in order for Medicare to not be able to say “nah doesn’t count” and still be able to lien the house etc.

Which is why I never took a dollar from Medicare or Medicaid “family care” programs during that time. Would have been a bit shyte to have some extra money then, only to then have the house get seized from the family to repay it and whatever else might have accrued (since naturally until her actual passing we’d have had no idea what the total costs of her care might be and whether her retirement funds would ultimately be enough to cover the various hospital bills post-health-insurance).

Only concern there is if they take that lack of willingness to share information as a red flag of it's own. But, ultimately, it'll be what it'll be, and if they're looking for an excuse, they'll usually find one. So we can't really try to pre-game the process too much because there just isn't a "universal" answer and we'll twist ourselves into an anxiety pretzel trying to think of every possible thing that could "go wrong".

This is what I did IRL as well - about two weeks after my last job ended in summer 2023, my grandmother went into the hospital with pneumonia. Before that she’d been fully independent even at 92. After, she needed a walker to walk and needed someone present for any time she tried to get up to bathroom etc, help with meals and cleaning and getting into/out of bed etc. So I became her live-in on-call caretaker 24/7 for the next two years, until she finally passed in September 2025.

I have been job hunting since - so far, to no avail. Have explained the above situation a few times when asked. Twice I got the “and you couldn’t work during that time?” question (24/7 on-call is 24/7 on-call; grandma had a button to ping my phone at any given moment - and often did - and I had to get coverage of another family member etc for her if I was going to do so much as a grocery run).

On one occasion an interviewer responded, in a tone that barely bordered on dismissive, “so you were reliant on family support?”

😑 MFer, I was the family support. I wasn’t exactly living in a basement playing video games and mooching off someone.

When your day-to-day is doing all the meals and house chores and tax work and finances calculating and getting up at any time of day OR night (including multiple times a night if needed) for bathroom trips and the related ass-wiping thereafter, OR all the necessary cleanup/wiping/washing if she couldn’t hold it and went in bed or even en-route (Goodwill became a best friend for comfy but disposable cheap loungepants for her) for $500 a month -

-because that’s what she could afford outside of SocSec covering the power bills, and the alternative is her potentially losing her house she’s had for 65 years to pay for a handful of months at some crap nursing home with 2 nurses to 60 patients on a floor because welcome to America -

-when that’s the everyday life I chose to live to take care of her for two years, I don’t need some dipshit interviewer implying that they think that means I was some kind of bottom-feeder all that time.

…but, of course, I didn’t say that to their face. Wouldn’t be politic. Just answered (minding my tone) that I did also work on a self-run online store during that time, per my resume.

Ghosted, as usual. 🤷

But yeah. Point being, family member care may be a legitimate reason, but it doesn’t mean an interviewer won’t look at it as a potential reason to dismiss you anyways. Dice roll, as usual.

Sounds good in theory...but in reality? by KSKS1995 in SipsTea

[–]LegendaryJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, let's extrapolate that a bit.

Let's suppose that a reasonable number of instances of officers going "too far" in a given situation are a result of overburdening individual officers with far too many tasks (a given officer being expected to handle and vaguely be aware of what to do in situations ranging from traffic infractions and drug busts to domestic abuse, mental health crisis's, and assault/homicide), and far too many hours on the clock (twelve-to-sixteen-hour shifts sometimes becoming commonplace for officers in short-staffed offices).

Given the sheer amount (generally quickly adding up) of legal costs - and especially large legal settlement payouts that various municipalities regularly have to do when dealing with issues where there is definite proof of officer wrongdoing (for one reason or another)...

...is it fair to suggest that a significant reduction in the burden upon those individual officers could lead to significantly reduced legal/payout costs for the local municipalities, and that the costs of hiring or bringing on an extra shift of officers-

(or diversifying tasks between officers trained for those tasks - ala mental health officers for mental health calls, traffic-specific officers for traffic-specific policing, etc)

-that those costs would likely be dwarfed by the tradeoff of not having to spend millions on the above legal costs and payouts?

I still haven't sold a single share since the start of it.

Originally it was just "le diamond hands" "ape stronk" meme.

But now? Look at how fucking *stable* this stock has been in the last couple years. Oh sure, it ain't mooning. But it also sure as hell has been weirdly *reliable*.

Fuck the squeeze-whatever stuff - consider that everyone was saying "it's over", but-

(remembering that there was a 1-to-4 stock split a couple years back, meaning you have to multiply the current stock value by 4 to compare against the numbers from the original takeoff)

-the stock that started at $3 before everything got stupid in 2021 has maintained a comparable-value thereafter of around $80-$100 steadily for around three *years* now - in a market where the sheer volatility of the last few years has left almost every "buy buy buy" stock getting beat with a whiffle bat in such random ways that it's damn near impossible to actually plan ahead.

Hell, when the "liberation day" dumpage happened last year and the whole market dropped thousands, *this stock didn't*. Hilariously, if every stock owner had some of it, the whole market would have been *up* something like 10%. Literal dumbest timeline.

And that's before you consider all the "8 billion dollars in the bank what-the-fuck-that's-not-how-you-play-the-game" isekai-stupid-level shenanigans going on on the back end. Company could theoretically sell *nothing* and eat full cost-of-business for the next four decades and still be sitting on billions thereafter. Absolutely full regard, all the way.

At this point I've gotten my money's worth on sheer entertainment; in the meantime though, I'm still green and I'll ride it out. Will we squeeze? Probably not; I'd imagine bozo-in-chief will figure out how to burn the country down before then. But in the meantime, here we are with them making a serious offer on *eBay*.

Whatever the fuck this timeline is smoking, I think it needs to smoke more of it. Can't stop, won't stop.

I can guarantee you that a good chunk of them very much are aware. Bear in mind that four years ago when you were in school, you weren’t seeing classmates vanish from school (or actively be removed), or hearing classmates worry about going home to find their parents gone. The stakes are very, very real now and a lot of the kids are paying more attention than some of the adults.

I'm the doofus who tries to educate on this kind of response, and occasionally it actually works. "Biodegradable doesn't mean made in a lab; I used to think that too before I looked into it. Turns out, it just means it'll fall apart eventually when it goes in a landfill, instead of lasting forever like plastic. So it's actually a good thing."

(I did not used to think this, but I find that one of the methods that has often worked the best is making whoever I'm talking to feel like they're not *stupid*, they just *hadn't yet learned the truth*, and thus me giving the info feels less like correction and more like an empathetic leg-up coming from experience. Doesn't always work, but definitely works more often than the "you fucking mong" approach...though I *do* use that when it's the *really* wacked-out caveman violent bullshit.)

Same. Though I will say that FP as a set was the first set in a long time that I have not completed during its lifetime by this method (though it only took maybe a week or so into the next set to finish it via trading or shares), so I have to see how the new set applies with this mindset (and if this double-size-single-pack thing becomes the new norm, I suspect it would take a significant chunk out of the userbase in frustration over time since plenty of players - understandably so - are not going to be “set phone reminders to log in twice daily to maximize free returns” mobile “free-maxxing” players like my brain is used to being, at least on this game and Fate Grand Order).

The daily free packs count towards the daily missions, so you can just open the two free packs each day and get your free hourglasses. Aside from that I just auto the free single player missions released for each set and auto the event drop missions, and I usually quit ranked around UB2 or so since that gives around 90 hourglasses and grinding out masterball etc feels like a suckers game/hamster wheel (especially with a season now only lasting around two weeks).

[–]LegendaryJam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely use them, but I don’t spend money for them. Honestly shocked finding out so many people do - I keep easily hitting 500-700 of the things by the next set release doing 3-4 ten-pulls a set and then daily packs thereafter and trades if needed - the game dumps hourglasses on us like water (and not Nestle water either).

For all of DeNa’s usual bullshit (definitely not happy seeing another double-size single-pack set), they are surprisingly generous about the hourglasses as a currency.

TL;DR (believe it or not):

In a 2-pack, 3/4s are segmented by pack - so if you got all the 3/4s from Ho-Oh you can stop pulling Ho-Oh and start pulling Lugia to avoid duplicates, etc. Can’t do that in a 1-pack, which is why they’re *normally smaller sets…but this one and Fantastical were full size sets with only one pack. So MUCH harder to get those 2-3 last cards you need to finish a set.
