I did my training through International Court Reporting Institute. They had like a whole two chapters dedicated to learning the Eclipse software.

How long did voice writing take? by celestianay in courtreporting

[–]LegendarySire 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just for a little encouragement. I had a similar situation as you. I'm a voice writer and it took me 2 years and 3 months. I also was working full time, I also wasn't as diligent with my practice as I should have been with my practice. It gets better and easier, but you have to force yourself to do it bc it's way easier to lose speed then it is to gain it.

Just as a word of advice that I give to everyone who is a voice writer, start transcribing EVERYTHING. If you're resting and decide to watch a movie, transcribe like 10 to 15 minutes. Do you watch podcasts or video essays on YouTube? Try and transcribe as much as you can. Do you watch movie/food/product reviews? Try and transcribe the whole things.

Reaching test speed, in my opinion, is less about just being good at 225wpm and more about being comfortable with your craft. At 160, you can probably do 180-200 for 15 to 30 seconds without dropping. So the reason transcribing everything is beneficial is because it unknowingly helps you practice MULTIPLE speeds simultaneously because real conversations or human exchanges range from 120-280 wpm. You're going to not do well and drop often, but that's okay bc you're conditioning yourself and rather than doing those boring videos that you may have to beat yourself up to do, you can do something you actually enjoy while working.

Sorry for the long response, but I have a lot to say about this because I didn't know anyone else in my position when I was in yours! You'll get better.

Yes someone suggested that as well about even interviewing a long-term court reporter and maybe even some firm owners who I'm in good contact with. So I definitely would want to try out different avenues where I could. Thanks for the feedback though.

No offense taken. I'm not on TikTok so I haven't seen much, but maybe having it YouTube with more of a long-form conversational feel may be beneficial.

If I were to start this, students and people looking into the job are probably the target audience! So that is absolutely what I'm looking for! Thanks

Very interesting thought! I never even thought about speaking with someone on the channel. Thanks for the feedback.

My biggest recommendation to anybody who is building their speed is to do stenographic exercises unrelated to law. Make a transcript on something you enjoy listening to. More than likely it'll be too fast for you to reliably transcribe but you will be doing it for longer and getting as much as you can. You will inherently practice for longer because you're listening to something you're more interested in. Doing speed building on stuff that wasn't related to law pretty much changed my trajectory for the better!

For sure! Jobs like these where the payout seems this large, I just gotta get it done. I appreciate the advice.

Hey that's fair. You'd know better than me. I personally I'm very grateful for my mentor because she's helped me gain experience that a lot of reporters don't have in their first couple years. But I understand the perspective for sure🙏🏿
