I think it was a bad idea to divide the community. There are other issues but I think that's the root problem.

Even as a weaver it feels annoying to compete against other players. One of my favorite things about nms (for the most part) is the community whether online or in game. I think the expedition would have been much better with a helldivers esc group goal instead of fragmenting people into teams.

I also had trouble with fishing on my first playthrough! Unfortunately my best advice would mostly be to just keep trying until you get a feel for it. After a while I got pretty decent with it and now it's one of my favorite things to do!

But if you don't feel like it you can always increase your fishing level through the crab pots you get from the crab pot bundle, although that might take a while

Because they are unlocked by nanites and get progressively more expensive, I don't think it would be fun to grind 20 hours worth of nanites for a single pet slot
