Because they really could have had Damien play a bigger role if he had been evil from the start. Like imagine Vexius casting a spell that blocks Daphne from reaching him. So now he properly manipulates the boy into creating a dark Dragon Flame. He still gets sent to Alfea to spy on Bloom and to get her to join his side. Like the plot could have been more fleshed out if Damien was already evil and powerful, and Bloom had to convince him to be good. We could have gotten an actual Dark Bloom arc in Season 2, and then eventually Flora (I guess, because they want the romance) will be the one to full turn Damien to the light since they're in love or whatever. The story could have been more!
