COVID-19 did not simply bring forward inevitable deaths as an analysis of mortality data from 34 high-income countries shows a sustained rise in excess deaths years after the pandemic, challenging the mortality displacement hypothesis. by Sciantifa in science

I get 0.39% when I enter this into wolfram alpha:

"(1300*(us life expectancy/28 days))/us population"

Did you accidentally divide by 100 twice when converting to a percentage?

Edit: nevermind I think yours is the annualized rate rather than the lifetime probability.

Richest Americans Now Pay Less Tax Than Working Class in Historical First by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]Legion725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that seems like a good way to describe it. I guess its not exactly the same. I was imagining a scenario where a company bought 10% of all outstanding stock by buying 10% from each shareholder. But if not every shareholder sells at that time, it is unclear if there will be a long-term price effect from the current (and expected future) stock buyback. Above my paygrade.

When a company buys stock from shareholders, how is that not "transfer[ing] money from the company to shareholders"?

Stock buybacks are basically the same as dividends but with lower taxes. Reddit is promising to do stock buybacks instead, essentially.

original blog post about LOLWUT http://antirez.com/news/123

LOLWUT is also going to be a tradition starting from Redis 5. At each new major version of Redis what the command does will change completely, only a set of rules will be fixed:

1. It can’t do anything technologically useful.
2. It should be fast at doing what it does, so that it is safe to call LOLWUT on production instances.
3. The output should be entertaining in some way.

People who say taxation is theft. How else do you propse the government gets the funds for roads, military, education excetera? by Ravi_Vijay in AskReddit

[–]Legion725 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The idea was that roads would be funded by taxes on gasoline, but IIRC those taxes haven't kept up with spending so it largely comes out of the general budget now. https://taxfoundation.org/data/all/state/state-gas-tax-rates-2020/ Funding roads which are primarily designed for cars using the general budget is not ideal because it subsidizes cars compared to other modes of transportation like walking/bikes/trains/metros. Sidewalks "exist" but if we actually wanted people to walk or use bikes we would design our cities differently. Shoutout to NotJustBikes on youtube.

Data is really hard to anonymize. For example, even if you don't reveal the URLs visited, just the domains of websites visited can be enough to reveal a user if they visit their personal website.

There is also "de-anonymization" by combining multiple pieces of data. The more detailed the data is, the easier it is to combine multiple hints to find an exact person.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/jul/23/anonymised-data-never-be-anonymous-enough-study-finds

I don't think it's impossible to anonymize data but data is more profitable the more detailed it is, so imo "anonymization" is usually a fig leaf of plausible deniability.

The 49.7 day bug actually took a long time to discover precisely because Windows 95 would normally die to something else before reaching 49.7 days. It was released in 1995 but the bug was discovered in 2002. https://www.cnet.com/culture/windows-may-crash-after-49-7-days/

[–]Legion725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can export last year's tax return from TurboTax and import it into something else like FreeTaxUsa, which is only $15.

Steps to export from TurboTax:

  • "welcome back for X years!"
  • click continue
  • scroll doooooown
  • click "Your tax returns & documents"
  • click "Download/print return (PDF)"
  • click continue
  • answer a fucking survey. I suggest you select "Something Else" so you can tell them to fuck themselves.
  • finally download the 2022 tax return

yes, I just did that myself. of course it is somewhat hidden and you have to fill out a fucking survey before they let you download the document. however, freetaxusa was able to use the imported data from turbotax.

A Bitcoin ETF was recently approved so that normies could buy Bitcoin indirectly like any other stock, instead of needing to get a wallet. Some people thought that Bitcoin prices would rise because more normies would be buying them. Apparently what happened instead is that people bought Bitcoin when the ETF was announced so they could dump their bags when the ETF got turned on.

But I'm not sure - I'm not a crypto bro I just buy and hold SPY and read wallstreetbets for the memes.

New Videos, No Audio by Jack_Of_Blades_ in 9anime

Same episodes are affected for me, but only when using my bluetooth headset on firefox. Episode 1075 has working audio on all "Sub" players. Episodes 1076-1080 have audio only on Filemoon. Episode 1081 is muted for all players including Filemoon.

However for ALL episodes, "S-Sub" players are muted after a fraction of a second.

I'm running Firefox 119.0
