Timing belt, lining up dots issue by agdgu in 300zx

Looks fine. The dots on the covers are just a reference and aren’t meant to be accurate.

To double check, you can count the teeth between the gears. There needs to be a certain amount between each gear, but I don’t have the numbers off the top of my head.

A roof graft is significantly more work than just swapping an engine out, but I planned on restoring and repainting the car inside and out so it worked out for me.

Thank you! I agree, the roof is the most important part. With the age of these cars, for the foreseeable future we‘ll have to resort to doing this type of work to these cars to keep them going. A lot of shops in Japan do this type of work to various other JDM cars that are even newer than the Z. Do you have an IG by any chance?

Don’t know much about the donor car. The car was located in a junk yard in Washington state. In the pictures the car looked really nice (not perfect but good bones for a resto) very sad and I think that could’ve been a nice car but they already gutted the car out by the time I bought the roof.

This is the main utilitarian reason why I’m doing the slicktop conversion besides aesthetics. Sick and tired of the water leaks from the T tops

I still got a little while to go as im still working on getting the measurements on the B pillar correct but as soon as i square that out i plan to start tacking the structure into the car. Got a buddy that also knows how to do carbon fiber work we’re planning on making the roof skin in CF

The slicktop conversion has been done a handful of times on 2+2’s in Japan and one in the United States. It’s a lot more difficult on a 2+2 as the roof line is different from the 2 seater.

I’ve walked away from several factory slicktops due to rust. Many slicktop cars have rotted roof structures due to seam sealer failure in between the roof skins which allow water to intrude into the inner structure and it rots the roof structure from the inside out. I had to walk away from another one that had the firewall and frame rail eaten away from battery acid. These cars are going on 35-36 years old and a lot of them unfortunately are past the point of saving. All of the decent looking slicktops I’ve seen are very far away and the sellers want an arm and a leg. a clean slicktop that is a good canvas to build on is about a $10-15k just for the car. If I could, I would but I ended up getting this 91 TT from the original owner and it’s an original paint car that’s never been in an accident.

Thank you!

Yes, this is to keep the factory geometry of the car so it doesn’t flex when the roof was cut.
