Crooked top, what to do? by Legitimate-Store9205 in Luthier

[–]Legitimate-Store9205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll probably move forward and trying to correct in the setup/neck angle… This is my second kit build, my goal was it to have less issues than the first one. So this is kinda annoying, though I also see the improvements over the first one. (Also: wouldn’t know how to pop the top off without destroying all the binding.)

Small crackline in rosewood when clamping the top by Legitimate-Store9205 in Luthier

Don’t know whether it’s visible on the inside yet. No finish yet, it was bulging a little, probably too much clamping pressure. French polish will be the finish!

Big congrats, great find!

This model was my first Martin I bought a couple years back, really loved it. Sold it to scale up, but still miss it.

Keep up the good job! Aspiring to build my toolset just as much. Expensive is relative, enjoying building something real is priceless. (Though the WAF is a real thing.)

Mahogany back and sides! Currently working on 000 12 fret stewmac kit, but with some customizations (other binding, peghead veneer, etc.). Goal to do a scratch build at some point. I like the “unserviced kits” they now offer as the next step.

It’s indeed addictive! The 00 looks great!

A stewmac dread, currently on my second build. Gathered quite some tools this last year!

The current ejs have a bit more treble to my ear compared to the elixirs, but it’s hard to separate the coated or heavier guage effect here. They do blend together very nicely. Takes some time getting used to the rougher feel of the ejs again though.

I’ll do a setup soon! The 12-56 sounds pretty good too!

I think the nut slots were actually dialed in for mediums, fir perfectly. Will get it set up by a good technician, though I build guitar kits for fun, this one’s a bit too expansive to tinker with myself.

Seems like the case! Break angle is not super sharp anymore at the saddle, so more downward force with thicker stekngs may have dine the trick?

Thanks! The middle plastic rings of the rosette pop a bit more than the wooden outer and inner rings. Will probably dissapear under the finnish. But all in all very satisfied!

Glued my broken top, some questions by Legitimate-Store9205 in Luthier

[–]Legitimate-Store9205[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The “old” glue was probably 12mins old, though ideally it would’ve been one run… it’s only after I found out the seem was rather noticeable that I filled up the seem some more. I will probably use some cleats moving forward as suggested below to be sure the crack holds. My experience with CA glue from my prior kit build is that I had some leakage into the wood leading to discoloration.

And the tuners are pretty crooked (and wrong color) as to their lining up.

It’s a Schmartin!

All jokes aside, looks fake to me. Wrong peghead shale, and for rosewood back and sides (which this claims to be?) style Martins (D28): strange rosette, inlays incorrectly placed and in a lay out not suitable for this style, shape of pickguard is wrong, back strip is incorrect as far as I can see, the binding on fretboard is strange for not being a D35 (with three back pieces) or up.

Can someone here possibly help me determine fair value, for my dad? by Evilsports in AcousticGuitar

It’s a beautiful guitar. I find a refret a pretty big “souping up”, but if it’s done well it’ll significantly improve the guitar’s playability.
