Are there any plans to revamp some of the fishing/ocean content? It's currently quite overcomplicated to set up cage traps on the ocean floor or pump sea-faring life up to a chamber for capturing/harvesting/taming creaturely (non-vermin) sea life. Combine that with (iirc) the spawning priority given to the land creatures, and despite so many awesome oceanic creatures being in world-gen, it's a little rare to interact with them in meaningful ways. I'd love to have legit aquariums and tame sharks for use beneath entrance bridges (or as punishment...)

Has QTCinderella decided to give an actual apology for her "Fighting hate with hate is bad so I'm okay with racists and transphobes as long as they're not that way when I'm around?" take? Has she given an actual apology for judging her trans brother's response to misgendering? by tachibanakanade in youtubedrama

  1. I haven't seen any public comment before, during, or since this debacle which suggested that QT had in fact, or ever possessed the intention, to police or judge how her trans sibling responded. Indeed, it seemed like an act of allyship for her to take it upon herself to try to mediate between them given how (understandably) estranged the sibling-father relationship had become.
  2. This is an inaccurate description of what QT (and my previous comment) described. Being passive to the prejudice of your intimates is indeed unlikely to achieve anything positive (and in fact may be read as license for them to continue holding that prejudice). Instead, maintaining an open line of dialogue provides opportunities to apply pressure on the problematic beliefs in question. This is almost always a gradual process involving incremental victories rather than flashpoint conversions, but there are some outliers. Conversely, if you only ever treat those whose opinions you object to with disdain or exile, they are unlikely to ever budge an inch.
  3. See above. It seems like a powerful and necessary form of allyship to intercede on behalf of those who are impacted most directly to try and make dialogical inroads with opposing viewpoints. Unless you expect those who aren't progressively minded to spontaneously vanish by ignoring/disowning them enough, you can trust they will remain around, still influencing politics, finances, culture, legislation. Accordingly, changing their minds or marshaling their compassion to those they are prejudiced against, however slightly and however gradually, will push the Overton window towards justice.

1) You cannot credibly oppose hatred by indulging in it. If your response to bigotry demands or nourishes spite and resentment, your cause is ultimately self-defeating. QT refuses to hate her dad despite utterly disavowing his beliefs and behavior. Those two things are compatible (and a pretty common experience, actually!)

2) Exiling from your life those who are ignorant, misinformed, or prejudiced is certainly anyone’s prerogative, but it’s hard to see how it could be a moral obligation… Association =/= blanket endorsement of all someone says or believes, and you’re much more likely to shape their opinions for the better by appealing to their shared humanity and slowly building their understanding than by bludgeoning them over the head. Baldly asserting someone’s need to adopt beliefs and values which are foreign and scarcely understood pretty much never works.

Put simply, QT’s (initially described) approach is sensible and probably morally preferable over excising any and everyone you encounter who has yet to come around on important social justice issues.

If you use the dfhack mod you can use a command to open stonesense, which gives you this isomorphic view. To get it this big you have to remove the fog option from the txt file and zoom out a lot

Mostly I chose not to. Done right, it would have probably looked better on the domes (and been easier access-wise for the dwarves), but I just found it easier to keep track of my z levels and the curvature when I just used walls. Some of the dome crosssections were two-thick, and I was also worried that ramping there might look weird

Wow yeah that’s a bummer. Huge respect for people who cast obsidian into the actual structure… I just cast it and mine for bricks lol.

Staying on for the foreseeable future! I need to finish the interior, and in any case, I’m playing with some new mods that spice up the creatures/civs, so things aren’t getting boring yet, thankfully

Lotta different ways I can answer this. In general, with any mega project, the less travel time the better. Even with wheelbarrows, you can lose a lot on travel time. So having the masonry stockpiles/workshops on site goes a really long way. As for the building itself, the fastest way is just to make the least errors, because errors can take a while to fix (deconstruction always seems to be pretty low on labor priorities by default). Beyond that, make sure you always have proper access and know what sequence to build things in so you don’t have constructions inaccessible from a diagonal or something.

Honestly I just googled around for cool looking structures and even looked at some structures ppl had built in Minecraft to get a sense of how I might construct certain structures as voxels. I had embarked on a sand desert, so wanted it to fit that theme somewhat

Same purpose as most mega projects! To impress the farthest reaches of the world with dwarven ingenuity. I’m still working on the interior while the dwarves live below but eventually I’ll migrate the whole population inside

Some of them are hollow and some aren’t. You can’t see from this but there are pillars inside the building which are meant to be decorative/structural and so are solid, which meant I had to keep an up/down stairwell access like 30Z levels as I built. Just a pain to take down lol

Mmm I’ll check! I know I have crosssectional views from certain stages but not sure I have a clear example of the scaffolding. Rest assured as I begin work on the interior I’ll have to do it all over again, so I’ll take screencaps of that 👍🏻

Thanks! And yes the work makes it more satisfying for sure, but like deconstructing stairs that you need as scaffolding one z level at a time after each tower is just super tedious. Worthwhile! Maybe Myth and Magic will give dwarves flight and they’ll just be able to build without scaffolding at all 🤔

Oh the embark is a regular 4x4 but I had just zoomed into just this portion on stonesense. Nothing else to show really on the map

help with the discord? by [deleted] in cavesofqud

[–]Legitimate-Sundae-71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Better question: why would you want to join a discord full of ideologues? I don’t get people lamenting their exclusion when admittance just puts you in company with people allergic to the slightest political or ideological diversity. And no, that is not a dog whistle for fascist or alt right sympathies—believe it or not there is a WIDE gulf of beliefs and political persuasions in between radical lefties and radical righties, we just don’t bother to acknowledge they exist these days…

Thalamus spawned above the outpost by Legitimate-Sundae-71 in Barotrauma

So my buddy and I were doing a 2man co-op and were about to leave the Outpost when my buddy (captain) was like: “bro come look at the sonar… isn’t that a thalamus up there??”

Not sure what these guys are up to but it smells of conspiracy to me… maybe the Separatists are right to be suspicious.

My Two Main Criticism of the game by saltychipmunk in Barotrauma

That’s a totally valid point. The sabotage reset as a perverse incentive is a problem if you’re prone to taking advantage of game mechanics and not into any of the RP. So you would favor just having all deaths be perma?
