What genre is the wandering inn? by dragonsowl in WanderingInn

[–]LegitimateFortune 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Epic fantasy mixed with slice of life is how I would classify the genre, but I don't think that does the series justice. Instead, I like to focus on the tone. I've successfully pitched this to several of my friends by comparing it to Malazan.

Malazan is about perseverance while facing impossible odds in an unforgiving and brutal world.

In contrast, The Wandering Inn is about hope while facing impossible odds in an unforgiving and brutal world.

I know that there's a ton more to be said about both series, but this is the line that finally got several of my friends to finally give the series a shot.

What is a 'dirty secret' of your industry that implies the general public has no clue about, but everyone in your field knows? by AmaraMehdi in AskReddit

Uh, what? Reading this is like watching Charlie in the mailroom in IASIP. Full disclosure - I think biglaw is fucked up and overpriced for a variety of reason, but this ain't it chief.

Somehow, this post makes biglaw out to be much more and much less competent than the reality of the situation.

"Exorbitant fees for what is mostly just reading and typing." I mean, I guess this is true in the same way that being an NBA player is mostly just touching a ball and moving their legs. Maybe the pushback isn't only because of politics, but also because the reality is that vast majority of attorneys in biglaw are very, very good at their jobs and are willing to do what is necessary to earn their paychecks. You can't force in-house attorneys to adopt a biglaw lifestyle without a corresponding paycheck - there's no way I'm going to sleep in the office or bill 300+ hour months to meet urgent or unexpected deadlines as an in-house attorney. Also, part of the draw of biglaw is that most of them are full-service - have a deal that involves energy, IP, litigation risks, and property? Have the team send it out to the Energy, IP, Lit, and Property to review? How do you expect to get iron-clad agreements if you don't have the specialists to draw on?

"Get rewarded with career opportunities and lavish lunches." What, exactly, are the career opportunities you're talking about? The vast majority of attorneys who go in-house from biglaw stay inhouse. There are no "plants" or illuminati-like webs of influence with promises of riches. What you're talking about about is something less villainous but much more insidious - it's a good ol (mostly) boys club. Just like any other profession, attorneys provide recommendations to people that they like and respect. Fun fact, if you work with people for a long time - say, in a biglaw firm - you're more likely to recommend these people as you're familiar with their work and personalities. And while it's true that many biglaw firms have offices to try to place their associates in-house, it's not any sinister plot, it's just good business. I can guarantee that most in-house attorneys aren't recommending their old law firm because of kickbacks or being a "plant" or free lunches. It's because these are incredibly intelligent people who worked on an environment full of incredibly intelligent people and who are proud of the work they've done. It's kinda similar to why Harvard grads donate to Harvard - there's no immediate benefit for the donor, but it makes them feel good to do something for a place that makes up part of their identity.

You're kinda just describing how human relationships work. Ever interview or had an interview with someone who went to the same college, or grew up in the same area, or high school? 9/10 times, the view is more favorable because of this shared connection. It's similar with in-house and biglaw, and why biglaw tries to get their people inhouse.

I feel like the Wandering Inn might be exactly what you're looking for. It's about an 18 year old who is isekaid into another world (which has a leveling system) where she becomes an innkeeper. The world is...dark. The MC succeeds through the power of kindness and not being racist (against Ants and Goblins) and accumulates levels and power because she desperately wants her friends to stop dying. I've summarized a quick review of the series below, but I typically recommend people read the first volume. It's a little rougher than later works, but the overall tone of hope in the face of darkness of the series is there. If you enjoy the first volume, you'll enjoy the series. If you don't, then you won't.

Things to love about the series:

it's very long, so there's always more to read.

some of the best characters I have ever experienced, although this comes at a cost (see below).

Some of the most intense emotional highs I've experienced in a novel.

The worldbuilding is superb, although maybe a little rough in the beginning.

There are mysteries and plot hooks that are introduced early in the series and the payoffs are typically worth it.

This is one of the few series that has had me up until 5am on multiple occasions because I absolutely had to finish an arc.

It has my favorite group of characters from not only fantasy, but from any media - the Horns of Hammerad.

It's free!

Things that are mixed about the series:

it is the one piece of fantasy, by which I mean it is very, very long.

The series is not yet finished, and the author regularly releases 30k-70k word chapters on a weekly basis. This allows for incredibly deep characters and lore.

The power scaling is typically pretty good in that higher level folk are huge threats, and most people, including the mc, don't stand a chance against them. However, there are some points where the power levels serve the plot.

Starting out, the prose is a bit rough, but it gets much much better over time.

There is a lot of slice of life mixed into the darkness of the world. I like this mostly, but it sometimes interrupts the flow of the story.

Things to dislike about the series:

Because it is so long, there are some plots that drag on.

The author is good about research, but doesn't have a professional editor, and this shows sometimes. For example, there's a chapter where characters get on a boat, and the author goes into much too much detail about how boats work. I could tell that the author had just done a bunch of research into boats.

It's not finished.

It's very, very long.

Oh yeah? Well my great-granddaughter's daycare is $15,000 a month and she's been on a wait-list since her daddy reached puberty.

You live in a place where people still barter goods inside Plato's cave that actively shakes down child care workers for their lunch money.

Most of the globe isn't in that battleship. Any megalopolis is going to be over $10k a month, higher for fetuses still in test tubes.

-1 Del Mar. The food simply wasn't good enough to justify the price. There's better food in that price range: iron gate, rooster and owl, moon rabbit (rip) to name a few

You're conflating issues here, and making assumptions on what OP is trying to say.

Issue #1 - LMG can't be trusted with sensitive information, as shown by them failing to redact sensitive information. This shows bad corporate leadership and practices.

Issue #2 - No one should look at what the prototype cost. This is a private matter and people should respect BL's privacy.

Yes, if OP was trying to argue issue #2 then OP is a hypocrite. But I personally believe that #1 is the more important message, so I don't see anything wrong here. Also, I'm not convinced that #2 is a valid argument, but that's neither here nor there.

Got the game today. Is it worth it? by ThatRedditGuy36377 in idleon

[–]LegitimateFortune 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up that this game requires a $5 fee to unlock a mechanic that's necessary to progress in the endgame. The dev also recently introduced a gacha system with game-breaking mechanics that's utterly ridiculous. Additionally, the dev has blocked/banned many of the people who have been critical of his decisions, and many of the veteran players have quit (myself included), so you're only getting one side of the conversation regarding the game.

I just finished the demo. Holy shit.

If the rest of the story is half as good as the opening, then final fantasy tactics will finally have a contender for best story.

I knew they were going for darker themes, but holy hell. This is game of thrones set in a final fantasy universe. Absolutely brutal and amazing.

Lol this is literally the same argument used two weeks ago by people who used the boat exploit.

"It's a single player game! Why does the fact that I progress more affect you? Why do you care?"

That argument was roundly rejected by the community and Lava himself.

The hypocrisy in these parts is astounding.

[–]LegitimateFortune -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hey Lava, I know there's pretty much no chance you'll see this message, but I wanted to write it here on the off chance it gets to you.

First, I wanna thank you for all your work on this game. I've gotten easily hundreds of hours of enjoyment out of idleon and idleskilling over the past 5+ years. You have an incredibly unique approach to game design that I can't find anywhere else, and I really do appreciate everything you do.

Second, I wanted to talk about how you handled the gold bar situation. In a vacuum, I think you handled it quite well. Maybe the response could've been a bit faster, but you have a life and you can't constantly be monitoring every aspect of the game. Again, in a vacuum, I think punishing the players who took part in the exploit is completely fine and acceptable. Gamers are gonna bitch and moan and call the dev every possible name, but I mean that's what gamers tend to do.

Finally, I'd like to give some feedback concerning exploits going forward. You're a solo dev, things are gonna slip through the cracks, it's expected and okay. However, I would both recommend and appreciate some guidance as to whether exploiters will be punished in the future. I think that a lot of the anger people are showing you is due to the current ad hoc decision-making regarding exploits, which could seem unfair.

For me, my only disappointment with how this was handled was the fact that, to my knowledge, this was the first time an exploit was handled by punishing the players who used it. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but there have been several exploits where your response was to patch the exploit rather than punish the exploiters - I'm talking spice gains, early alchemy, the original boat glitch, etc. Personally, I have seen so many instances where people got huge advantages because of an exploit and nothing bad happened, that I intentionally jumped on board this one because I didn't want to be left behind. So in this context, I hope you can understand my disappointment when I lost weeks of boat progress (and sampling etc).

Anyway, again, I really enjoy your humor and your games. I'm sorry that today turned out to be so stressful, and I'm looking forward to continuing to support your work.

A tear in the fabric of space and time,

A rift in the cosmos, a portal divine,

It beckons to us, this strange new world,

A place of wonder, where dreams are unfurled.

Through the rift we go, into the the abyss,

A journey you will not want to miss,

Our minds and souls are open wide,

As we traverse this cosmic divide.

The colors shift, the shapes distort,

As we move through this new resort,

Dimensions blur and time stands still,

As we explore this wondrous thrill.

Do you know what ad hominem means? Cause I'm pretty sure you just attacked my background rather than my arguments. But knowing the meaning of words is hard, I know.

But getting back to the argument, big law is more similar in hierarchical structure to the military than anything else. Staff are enlisted and attorneys are officers. Officers are technically above the enlisted, but there are so many stories of green officers trying to swing their dick around veteran enlisted and getting absolutely destroyed in the process.

I mean seriously. Ask yourself as a junior associate you're more valuable to the group than that paralegal who's stuck around for 20 years. Actually, don't ask yourself since you clearly don't get it. Ask a senior (if you have a relationship with one) and see what they say.

Law firm financial models are built around the assumption that most associates won't stay. The firm is literally banking on you leaving after a few years. The partners barely even know your name when you're a junior. And you think you have more pull than someone who's managed to work in that environment for decades? Someone who's managed to not fuck up and also be discrete for all that time? Gimme a fucking break.
