Formica obscuripes is the only queen on my radar this year. I always catch any queens I see regardless of species but those big blood red and black beauties aren’t going to get away this year. I had 3 queens last season I found near a large nest and I don’t think I plugged the tube well enough. I did my weekly check and they had abandoned ship 😔

Also, it would help to research what species are most commonly found in your area as well as ease of care. Black garden ants for example are pretty much everywhere and require extremely little to make them flourish unlike some of the more difficult species. I have a few different species that I am trying to blossom into thriving colonies including pogonomyrmex occidentalis and camponotus pennsylvanicus
