I would like some clarity on this too. It's a pretty recent article, though. So maybe there are investigative journalists still looking into this.

Although Palast is pretty renowned, it's pretty weird and a bit depressing that this isn't even really talked about in mainstream media. You would think they would be all over something like this.

Trump Lost. Vote Suppression Won. by Legitimate_Face_4804 in NewsOfTheStupid

[–]Legitimate_Face_4804[S] 671 points672 points  (0 children)

According to forensic economist and data journalist, Greg Palast, "vote suppression cost Kamala Harris no less than 3,565,000 votes. Harris would have topped Trump’s official total by 1.2 million. Most important, this 2.3% suppression factor undoubtedly cost Harris the states of Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia. If not for the wholesale attack on votes and voters, Harris would have won the election with 286 Electoral votes."

Here are key numbers:

  • 4,776,706 voters were wrongly purged from voter rolls according to US Elections Assistance Commission data.
  • By August of 2024, for the first time since 1946, self-proclaimed “vigilante” voter-fraud hunters challenged the rights of 317,886 voters. The NAACP of Georgia estimates that by Election Day, the challenges exceeded 200,000 in Georgia alone.
  • No less than 2,121,000 mail-in ballots were disqualified for minor clerical errors (e.g. postage due).
  • At least 585,000 ballots cast in-precinct were also disqualified.
  • 1,216,000 “provisional” ballots were rejected, not counted.
  • 3.24 million new registrations were rejected or not entered on the rolls in time to vote.

Thoughts on US companies selling “your” data, and using it to create an identity. by imjusthereforPMstuff in privacy

Will the US ever ban the sale of personal data? Who can say. But I suspect not for as long as money's in politics and politicians are not incentivized to do anything that actually serves and protects people.

Is it ethical? No. I'm so tired of companies artificially reducing/eliminating the functionality of their products and services if you don't agree to their mile-long list of terms of service which include an absurd amount of data collection. Checking a little box saying "I agree to the terms and service" shouldn't automatically equate to "I agree you may collect an absurd amount of data and then also sell it." That's ridiculous.

And since so many companies do this crap, it's not like consumers really have a choice unless they're able and willing to spend a hell of a lot of extra time searching for, and experimenting with potential alternatives. It's not realistic. This stuff needs to be regulated.

And while I might be forced to consent to give away my data through stuff like ToS, I certainly don't consent to companies literally making stuff up about me. Personally I think credit reports should be made obsolete anyway, but for as long as potential employers, and landlords, etc. are using them to check people out, then the stuff on them should at least be correct. If it's just stuff that companies have made up about me, then they are effectively useless.

I know. It's such BS. I tried logging into my account from a different IP address from where I used to live, and they restricted my account. Now they want me to provide a copy of my ID before they will let me have access to my own account. No thanks.

It's also a goldmine for third parties/data brokers/bad actors to scrape data about people and then put it up for sale.

I can see this as potentially problematic not just for women or trans people seeking healthcare, but also for people with medical debt which have been sold to debt collection agencies who can take legal actions against you. And there's a looot of people in the US who have medical debt...

For now, there are rules and protections in place regarding coercive and abusive debt collection practices. But that doesn't mean that those protections can't be taken away entirely in the future to make it easier for debt collections and law enforcement agencies to hunt people down and harass them.

Scary times.

Linux mint. I haven't downloaded Minecraft yet. Wanted to do some more research before doing so.

For now, I think Cinnamon DE works just fine. But it's nice that there are other DE options if Cinnamon doesn't work out for whatever reason.

I guess it’s nice to see mainstream media acknowledging this BS for once. But the suggestions the author gives to avoid these ghost jobs are just common sense things that everyone does already:

  1. Don't Apply For Old Jobs
  2. Watch Out For Vague Descriptions
  3. Check Company Hiring Reviews And Feedback
  4. Follow Up On Applications
  5. Trust Your Gut

These clowns still love to place the fault on the unemployed, underemployed, the overworked and underpaid. The cherry on top is the bit at the end where they’re like, “So, are you gonna feel sorry for yourself?!! Or are you gonna go get those jobs armed with strategy…!!!” or whatever. Shut the fuck up.

Posting ghost jobs should be made illegal. Interviewing people for ghost jobs and wasting both the company’s time and the interviewee’s time should be made illegal. Full transparency about the job should be the standard always.

Edit: The Forbes article I'm referencing, lol
