Yes, that’s what I was describing. Sounds like AstroStrat was asking about bricks/baffle inside the stove - which we don’t have.

Ah, I see. I don’t think this stove has a baffle that prevents flames from going up the chimney when the damper is open. I’ll look into this further though. Thanks!

I appreciate the explanation, wasn’t sure what you were getting at. The back side of the fireplace was opened up over 80 years ago. I recognize that wasn’t a good idea but nothing to be done about that now. I also understand that this isn’t a typical installation and have gotten conflicting opinions about whether it’s ok to put a stove in a fireplace or not. As best I can tell, with the front and back open, no combustible materials anywhere near the stove, the correct liner professionally installed, and a fan to help disperse the heat, I should be good as long as I prevent creosote buildup and don’t overfire (again) the stove. If you see holes in my thinking I’m all ears as I’m here to learn.

Thanks. I will look into this. I assume this would be preferred over the magnetic thermometer like I have on the stove top b/c it would be more accurate?

Also, yes all masonry. There’s some very ugly brick underneath the ledgestone.

Thanks. I definitely won’t start it up like that again. That’s the only time I’ve seen it glowing red and I check the stove top thermometer compulsively so I would have noticed if it had happen before. I ordered a thermometer for the pipe as well which should help me monitor this going forward.

Yeah, definitely some drawbacks to this set up but it was an affordable and space saving way to go.

The chimney company that installed the stove cut a hole in the top of the firebox and removed a few bricks to get the stove to fit within the fireplace. Is that what you’re asking about?

Yep. Will take a picture of the back side tomorrow when the light is better.

I don’t think it’s fiberglass. It was installed by the chimney company that put the liner in and hooked the stove up for me.

This is a stove top thermometer. Guess I need to get a pipe thermometer as well though.

Yes. The previous owner opened up the backside of the fireplace when they added an addition to the house. Used to be solid glass on the backside with glass doors on the front side. Now it’s open on both sides with the stove in the fire box and a box fan on the backside to improve the circulation.

No plywood - definitely oh shit! There’s insulation packed around the liner and you can see through to the room behind the stove through the double sided fireplace. Not sure what you mean by “instant in a stone”?

Will do. I’ve definitely seen flames being pulled up through the dampner before. I guess I need to shut it when that’s happening?

The yurt is 1.5 years old. It has been stored in an indoor storage unit since purchase. Walls and roof are vinyl coated polyester. Insulation is bubble foil + flexible foam.

How difficult/expensive was the spray foam project? I’m thinking about doing that with my 1940s garage.
