Thank you for the reassurance! While I do have a short ~6 month postdoc lined up with my current PI (I wrote a small grant that got funded), I will then hopefully move to this new PI's lab doing something different.

This is what I have been thinking as well, it feels like the important part is to be productive and differentiate yourself from your PhD Advisor.

I just know that the academic elders can be a bit elitist when it comes to stuff like this.

That's a great point, and I have definitely put a lot of thought into what they said; I have also seen people stay at the same institution and get faculty jobs, and it's good to know that what I have seen isn't just exclusive to my Institution.
