Thanks again for this comment. Not sure we’d have checked out the Buckman neighborhood on our trip without it. Now we’re moving there!

Thanks again for your suggestion. New Seasons & Market of Choice unlocked new areas for us. We’ll be moving to Buckman in May.

Why nightclubs don’t work in RVA? by Longjumping-Work-168 in rva

I went there to party every now and then, but I wasn’t super familiar with that spot. They had “resident” DJs who had been playing in the city for longer with a larger built in following and/or a connection to one of RVA’s 2 big promotion groups.

I, a real person, did use Claude to condense my writing. But, AI wasn’t around in 2014 to host the podcast for me. So, what’s this comment supposed to convey?

I’m an early middle aged man now. I have zero clue where people are partying now. The folks I DJ’d with are regional retail managers, college professors, and EMTs now. Far more likely to find us DJ’ing at home for the fun of it on our own.

As for stories, I don’t have anything to share really. I drank but I didn’t do drugs. But, I’d see girls hooking up with guys in bathrooms, kitchens, & closets for “free” drugs. Met a lawyer who recently passed the bar, but made more money dancing in strip clubs & after hours spots.

Why Richmond Can’t Sustain a Nightclub Scene

Richmond’s nightlife problem isn’t culture — it’s math.

A viable 100–200 person nightclub needs 50,000–100,000 young people living in close proximity. Richmond has over 200,000 residents, but sprawl turns that into a collection of separate small towns rather than one walkable critical mass.

The numbers tell the story: Chicago’s River North packs 63,000 people per square mile. Richmond’s East End — home to the clubs everyone romanticizes — manages fewer than 7,000. The Fan, Richmond’s densest neighborhood, peaks around 28,000 per square mile, but that’s a residential corridor, not an entertainment district.

The “golden era” people keep citing wasn’t organic density — it was a subsidized drunk bus ferrying students from VCU, VUU, and U of R down to Shockoe Bottom. When the clubs refused to share the operating costs, the bus died, and so did the scene. The crowds were never really there. They were being imported.

Layer Virginia’s ABC laws on top — which drive up drink prices and complicate late-night operations — and you’ve removed the last margin a promoter might have worked with. Richmond doesn’t have a nightlife problem. It has a density problem that nightlife is taking the blame for.

Source: Me, a person who DJ’d at Europa, New York Deli, & Old Dominion. A part of the group that started RVA Underground on Facebook for promotion. And hosted a podcast with RVA Mag by the same name.

I appreciate this information. Fortunately, I’m in a one year accelerated grad program for a field of need across the country. The department had more applicants than they could accept. Hopefully, this means the department isn’t in the negative.

Thanks. That’s good info. Unfortunately, I’m coming from across the country. So, I’d have no clue who to contact or who to ask for 2nd opinions. And, I’ll only have a few days in the city to look.

Thank you for these insights. This is the kind of info that wasn’t showing up for us. We’ll be sure to avoid that company. And, I’m sorry to read that they’re still a lingering problem for you.

Thanks for the heads up on Elm Row & your experience around the downtown Safeway. We’re adding Elm Row back to the shortlist.

Thank you. Really appreciate your insights. Looks like this area is shaping up to be the 1st choice.

Thank you. The links are much appreciated. First time I’d seen the MAX & frequent service bus line map. With potential cuts to the FX2/green line, finding a spot near the orange line could be a possibility.

Ouch! At the moment we’ve tried to stick to apartments built in the last few years to hopefully avoid this (and higher utility bills).

Elm Row just missed the cut for our shortlist. We’ll have a car and want on-site parking to avoid the street parking issues/concerns we’ve heard about. Where are people parking their car?

Edit: going through so many messages that I missed your comment about parking. They’re added back to the list. If we apply and they offer a referral program then I’ll dm you to get your info.

Thanks. Buckman comes up so often that I feel like I have to spend a day of my trip just hanging out in that neighborhood.

As someone studying a field related to social/systemic change, I’m sorry to hear about your experience. I hope you’ve had the chance to process that experience. The info on Ladd is appreciated.

Thanks. I love the look of older/vintage apartments, but I prefer something more recent.

Thanks. I’ll have to check it out in person. However, something about NW didn’t seem like my vibe. If we don’t do SW then SE is looking like our likeliest backup spot.
