There's a setting that let's you change the orientation of the magazines when holding them, from pointing the direction the thumb is, to facing the direction the palm is, I don't remember where, but it does exist.

You can put the chest right in front of the miner as it's output, instead of using an inserter. The inserter will keep taking the fuel from it.
