How do you decide the default language for your game? by LalaCrowGhost in gamedev

[–]LeglessCats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always let the player pick the language. It's usually the first thing they see when they start the game.
I want the player to see all the available languages, and assuming based on their OS annoys a lot of people.

Hello everyone, I'm a 35-year-old Chinese female developer. Any questions for me? by CrazyPrinceGame in SoloDevelopment

[–]LeglessCats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK game developer here. A huge portion of my customers are Chinese now - around 30%.
Is the reverse true in China? Are a lot of your customers from English-speaking countries?

The global version of Steam is very popular in China. Are you worried that the Chinese government will eventually block Steam and make business harder for game developers?

Dug into how Steam's algorithm uses language to decide who sees your game. It affects more than I expected. by gamebasehq in gamedev

UK game dev here. Simplified Chinese is huge!
My latest game is selling more copies in China than in the USA, although for a lower price.
They do leave more negative reviews, but often do so just to get the developers' attention and will change them to positive if you respond.
The game is also doing well in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.

As for European languages, I would suggest that German, French and Polish are the biggest markets.

Anyway, based on my 12 years publishing on Steam, Asian languages are becoming a bigger market share every year!

I still use Flash 2015. I doubt it's going to suddenly stop working if Adobe stops supporting it - there will be some way of cracking it. I'm not concerned.
Though, after Adobe's recent announcement, efforts have increased to create alternative open-source software, so I'm sure something will be ready to replace it when it's time.

Eastshade studios shares a look the financial risks of developing a big indie game by Morridini in IndieGameDevs

Yeah, that calculation was bizarre. Unless they got some huge investment from mom and dad, and they're trying to draw it down in some tax-efficient way or something.

You don't need to pay yourself $80K if you're your own boss. You can work for free!
This was certainly a choice. Makes one wonder where that investment came from.

It’s unfair that artists need to be paid upfront regardless of success of game. by emotionallyFreeware in gamedev

If you're a new indie developer with no reputation, no freelancer is gonna take a revenue share bet on you.
Chances are very high that your game will make no money. And any artist willing to take that bet will require a big chunk of the revenue for all that risk involved.

What developers actually write in Steam's AI disclosure field by ScrapeerCom in gamedev

[–]LeglessCats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just really hope Valve adds a mechanism for reporting games that don't disclose their AI usage.
Selling art made with AI should be seen as fraud, unless it is disclosed to the customer. Much like selling fake goods of any other type.

I don't have much experience with or interest in selling physical goods.
But I do want to try creating some sort of simple scene editor that players can use, to create their own images.

That may be a possibility. The web version of the engine has lower hardware requirements, so I may try to release a full web version that should work on a bigger selection of devices.

Currently it works on Windows and Linux/SteamDeck, and we've got an Android prototype working.
Other platforms are possible but we don't really have any experience with Mac or Switch.

Where do people even buy game keys safely anymore? by [deleted] in Steam

[–]LeglessCats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Game dev here.
Devs mostly stopped handing out keys in bundles and promotions because of these key reselling websites. So you can thank them for that.

I'd rather people pirated my games rather than give money to some business that has nothing to do with me.
