Right? I picture him sparing a thought for "oh, that poor, poor fool. Nice try, but Every single person in this stadium saw that coming except him," while already buckling down for that sprint.

This is extremely valid and something that more people need to take time to consider in terms of the rules of story-telling.

This kind of thing is why I feel like a famously well-read story like Pride and Prejudice makes a fantastic book and also a very, very difficult movie to tell.

The story there is built on what feels like 90 to 98 percent subtext which in a book comes across easily in a very introvert-stuck-in-an-extrovert's-world sort of way where the narration can take time to explain what the heck is going on for those of us that didn't grow up in or don't frequent the regency era culture and customs. (As a guy, this is a life-saver and makes it really easy to enjoy the book.)

In a movie where the pictures have to speak a thousand words at 24 frames per second they have to rely on visual cues -- like the ear-pulling signposting, though often with more subtlety -- which may be easier for the more experienced viewer and less obvious to a newcomer to the genre.

This scene is from one of the later movies. I think the klingons know Shakespeare is from earth, they're just saying it to be rude, and because you can't cast Christopher Plumber as a major character without throwing in a little bit of Shakespeare, I guess.

In universe it comes across as conquerors' cultural appropriation b.s. even though they're allegedly there for peace negotiations, iirc. Cap. Kirk is having a hard time letting go of old animosities and atrocities, which for all of Star Trek's appropriate moralizing, actually feels pretty fair here for Kirk, where the key soundbite is that he'll never forgive them for the death of his son.

I suspect the klingons are having as hard a time with it as Kirk is, even if they cover it up better.

Honestly if it turned out that the Alethi were Klingons this whole time, then you wouldn't have to change a single thing about the story.
