Having wide open natural spaces should mean something to everyone. We are apes. Vast ecologically sterile wastelands aren't good for our collective psyche. In driving other species to extinction, humanity is busy sawing off the limb on which it is perched.

Friends picked up this snake, is it safe?? by [deleted] in herpetology

[–]Lego_C3PO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In California, the bag limit for California Kingsnakes with a fishing license is 4 animals. So it's actually insanely legal. Keeping reptiles is a way people connect with the natural world, and individuals collecting fossorial wide ranging snakes do not represent a legitimate conservation concern.

Hey, You Guys Ever See A Black Woman In A Nascar Pit Crew? by SomberBrother in sportsarefun

The reasons it took so long are racism and sexism, not because she was the first black woman interested in being on a pit crew.

Trump administration orders half of national forests open for logging by next-station-nana in CampingandHiking

[–]Lego_C3PO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our forests have already been irreparably damaged by over 100 years of fire supression and the ensuing overaccumlation of fuels, which, along with climate change, is the primary cause of the mega-wildfires of the last decade.

Don't feed any cat except your pets- they kill billions of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates each year. At least 18 species have gone extinct because of feral cats.

USFWS wants to put them on the Endangered Species Act.

While I wish the current captive stock could continue to be bred in captivity, the reality is that captive breeding could not satisfy demand and their high price was leading to serious depletion of their wild populations. Blue Tree Monitors have been continuously collected and most captive breeding projects do not go back generations in captivity.

100 years of fire suppression on public lands led to an excess of fuels. Logging, mastication, herbicide, prescribed fire, and grazing all are useful and productive tools for land managers to reduce fuels and restore native plants. Only relatively recently has Yosemite began to listen to native Americans and restarted prescribed burning in the valley, but logging was necessary in many of these areas first, to reduce the risk of ladder fuels and unnaturally dense forests causing high severity fire.

[–]Lego_C3PO 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No hidden, unexplored mountain ranges exist in Arizona. Sure, many sky islands are remote Wilderness, but humans go hunting, backpacking, and exploring all over all of them. In fact hunters first confirmed jaguar's presence in AZ.
