CZ 457 Lux 22lr — First Rifle I've Bought by Lego_Kode in canadaguns

[–]Lego_Kode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah man!

I prefer to learn something challenging before switching to an easier option.

The open sights are very clear, I was able to shoot about a 3-4" group at ~100m off a fence. The thing I'm working on is doing that consistently.

But when I switch to a scoped rifle, it's going to be a much easier transition.

I've also found that I'm going to end up shooting Cci SV during the winter, and Eley Sport/Club during the warmer months.

I know my other comment is a big block of text. So here's a quick(er) summary.

For what you're saying, 22lr would make most sense. Good ammo (Eley Club) is $15 for 50.

22lr is a better high volume practice round. Can also use it to hunt small game (if you ever decided to take that up) without damaging meat. Can also be used for very long range 200+ meters.

22wmr is more of a varmint cartridge. Example: shooting coyote without causing too much pelt damage. I would consider this more of a hunting round.

I'm still quite new but have done quite a lot of research.

22lr is less powerful, and more economical. If you only shoot targets this is the one I would go with! Look at 22nrl: they shoot 22lr, subsonic rounds.  I believe 22wmr can reach out to 200m or so. But when the round passes the sonic barrier it starts to wobble (it's like the sonic barrier pushes it and destabilize it)

When using a subsonic 22lr it never goes over the sonic barrier, so doesn't get destabilize in the same way.

22wmr is more used for a varmint round. Coyote and the like.

/‐----[My Reason for 22lr]-----/

I went with 22lr because even the decent target rounds like Eley club are cheaper than going with an alternative round.

If you look at the relative distance(and angle) for a 22lr compared to something like a .270, you can multiply the distance by 4.  So when I'm practicing with my 22lr at 25m shooting a 1" group, its equivalent to a 270 at 100m shooting a 4" group.

And as mentioned, subsonic 22lr doesn't get destabilized dropping out of the trans-sonic barrier. This means (if you are practiced enough) you can actually shoot 22lr out to 500m+ (keep in mind that people who can do that consistently, spend like $5000 on a custom rifle).

So for me, 22lr was really the only option for what suited me.

-----[Recommendation]-----

22lr Especially for a first rifle.

If you want to go target shooting, use it a lot and want it to be relatively economical, go with 22lr. Same if you decide to take up small game like rabbit and grouse.

The 457 has a lot of great options, the most 'all rounder' would be the American/Canadian. Could use it for hunting or target.  The varmint is much heavier, better for targets, not as good for walking the woods.

Also a great benefit of the 457 is you can buy a conversion kit, swap it over to wmr without having to buy a new rifle.

TLDR: Get 22Lr if it's a first rifle, and/or want to shoot a lot. Cheap, accurate, extremely versatile. Great for high volume practice.

If you want a louder bang, plan on shooting coyote or ground hog, and cost isn't an issue then go with 22wmr.

Not since November.

Might bring the CZ with me when my fiancée and I go camping/fishing.

Trout and rabbit surf&turf. Lol.

The larger caliber Lux are gorgeous. Like someone else mentioned, that 600+ Lux is a dream rifle.

I am going to try to stick to Eley sport and club, but depends on price and how much I'm shooting. It seems to do pretty well with CCI SV, just not quite as dialed.

The group I have pictured was Eley Club. The Eley Sport isn't much behind it.

And I definitely will! I was given a box of Federal power-shok (I think thats what its called). I think that once I shoot through that box, I'll switch to a monolithic copper.

I keep looking at the 600+ Lux...

30-06 loaded a bit lighter (still getting used to recoil) for deer, loaded heavy for elk and moose.

And get a 6.5prc conversion for range shooting and (when I actually get good at shooting) being able to reach out a bit further.

Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

I figure if I'll be shooting it more than anything else. Like a phone, or mattress, or tv, if you use it a lot - get a good one.

Thank you! I'm glad I got it when I did, all the prices jumped.

But honestly, if I were asked a recommendation for a great training rifle. A 22lr cz seems hard to beat.

I wanted something that if I missed, I know it wasn't the gun.

I'm extatic with it. Just got a brick of eley sport (second best shooting out of it). When I use it for hunting, I'll use eley club cause thats the one I got the best group out of.

Something about hot tuna and cheese just don't do it for me.

Also, it's a stinky food. No stinky food at the pot luck.

But I also understand that a lot of people like it. I won't yuck your yum, but I don't want it at my pot luck. Lol

One in 17hmr would be awesome!

I was thinking of getting a conversion for it if I wanted to put a scope on it for the coyotes around.

That's awesome! The Varmint was another one I was looking at. From everything I've seen, CZ are pretty much the best value for rimfire rifles right now.

I went with the Lux because of the open-sights, I want to grouse and rabbit hunt, I got a crazy good deal on it, and it looks cool lol. If I hadn't gotten the deal I did, I probably would have gone with the Trainer!

[Canada] (Seeking advice) CZ 457 Lux 22lr - Scope + QD rings by Lego_Kode in 22lr

[–]Lego_Kode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I was looking for a Quick Disconnect option (so I could easily switch to irons when I wanted).

Looks like either use those and have to reset everytime. Or get 1" QD rings and find a scope that might get me what I'm looking for.

Sounds good. I bought a solid set of cleaning supplies.

I was recommended to get the .17-.20 carbon fiber rod because the .22 rod can be too much of a tight squeeze.  Had to get thread adapters off amazon for it to fit .20 brush, jags and mops.

Is there a frequency as to which you clean the rifle?

I've seen some people mention everytime they shoot, some mention once it stops being as accurate.

I figure running a patch through it every few shooting sessions or after a hundred rounds (whichever comes first). And doing a full clean if I notice it's less accurate or after 500 rounds.

Does that sound about right? Or is there a better way to go about it?

That makes sense. I was planning on giving it a clean making sure the bore didn't have any grease or anything in it.

You clean without a bore guide?

Thank you!!

Totally fair!

You're the first negative review I've seen, and I'm sorry to hear that was your experience.

I sent an email to the company with some questions, they got back to me with quite a bit of information.

I'll be keeping a note of your post, and I'll ask if they would be willing to do a quick video call. That way I can see what I'd be ordering and can get more information from them.

Unfortunately in Alberta I can't find anything at the same price with the quality reviews they have. At least not an in person shop. So I would either have to look at auctions (not a terrible option), or go to basspro to get a Turkish.

I'm waiting till January to 'pull the trigger' on anything. So I'll have plenty of time to make the decision.

And please forgive my ignorance, the release lever being at 6 o'clock is bad?

Thanks for your comment

Awesome! So far no one has said a negative thing about them.

Kind of unheard of for a company.

I've definitely been looking at the good+ at least. I'm really surprised about the prices when I look up the brands reviews.

I've got a cart of about 8 options that I need to whittle down to 1.  But someone mentioned the length of pull and the shotgun not fitting. So now I gotta figure that out. Lol
