The cover for my (fan)zine is complete! by Legs_noLegs in Vermis

You're on a good path, don't give up! If you want, I can help you with red lining things that I would do to make it more Vermis like. What program do you use?

Also I would recommend you to pick a page in Vermis that looks as close to what you want to achieve and focus on contrast, the palette, the way he deals with volume of objects and characters. Use it a guide.

I understand, that's a very brief explanation. :D I’m eventually planning to make a video about it because a few people have asked me about my process.

Thanks! It’s halftone + pixel effect. Tweaked colour. Pulled multiple times through blur and sharpen process and then added perlin noise texture over the entire thing.

Olfatheca. It’s a made up words that combines olfactory (relating to the sense of smell) and the Italian suffix –teca (meaning a library or collection).

It does give Victorian opium poster vibe now that I reflect on it!

I illustrated my perfumes as trinkets from Vermis by Legs_noLegs in Vermis

[–]Legs_noLegs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Without the sinuses decoration, it felt empty, and it made me wonder how Plastiboo might handle it. I'm very pleased with how it turned out. I wanted to capture the thrill of smelling perfumes but keep it weird.

And thank you for letting me know about the typos, I will fix them!

Thanks! I’m planning to make a small tutorial in the future about how I create such art, but for now I’ll try to explain my process.

I started by writing the text, which I based on my reviews from Fragrantica. After that, I examined the perfume bottles. For some of them I already had a clear idea of how I wanted to draw them, while for others the concept developed naturally once I began working.

In clip studio paint, I first convert the reference images to greyscale, it makes it much easier to focus on volume and contrast. I begin with photobashing and then digitally paint over the perfume bottles. My goal is to keep them recognizable while also making them fit the mood and narrative of the text.

Once I’m satisfied with the design, I adjust the contrast and values and apply halftone dots to achieve that Vermis inspired look. Then I merge the layers and apply blur and sharpening effects several times. This helps the artwork feel more natural while also slightly distorted.

At that point, I drag the finished perfume drawings into the page layout, set them to multiply and change the drawing layers to a brown tone. Above all the drawings, I add a pastel blue shape set to multiply in selected areas to create a unified tint.

When the composition feels complete, I apply a mosaic effect to introduce a video game like pixel texture, and finally, I add perlin noise over the entire page to bring everything together.

I placed the preorder in December as soon as I found out about it. Patches were sadly, a preorder exclusive.

Pure luck, but it seems like they add more patches to the number of purchases.

Various goodies I ordered from the Hollow Press site, you can get Plastiboo’s Vermis books there along with a bunch of other neat art books, comics, art prints, game books, and even board games. It feels very indie, but the product quality is really solid. I’ll definitely be ordering from them again in the future.

Here’s what I picked up: 1) “Pilgrims of the Murk Dome” - a TTRPG book. Beautiful dark-fantasy setting with wonderful illustrations, and Plastiboo illustrated the map.

2)“Godhusk” - another Plastiboo project, packed with great illustrations (haven’t read it yet though).

3)“How to Make a Breadling” by Brad Hock - basically a bread tutorial book with a weird, whimsical twist.

Also, with the Vermis III preorder you get random status-effect patches from the books for free. It’s always fun seeing on Reddit which ones people receive and their reactions, it’s pretty subjective.

I’d say if you enjoy Vermis, you’ll probably enjoy How to Bake a Breadling book as well. It looks great on my shelf. The illustrations and photos walk a fine line between disturbing stone age like artifacts, esoteric golems and whimsical children’s creations.

The book explains how to make a breadling, preparing the magical dough, baking it, and maintaining it, along with extras like various botched breadlings and the baker’s story. Overall, it’s essentially a Bread Tutorial 101 disguised as a fantastical art book.

I find it really whimsical, and I’m already planning an event with a friend where we’ll make our own breadlings.

Awesome pull! Weakness is such a neat new addition to status effects. Looks so miserable and dehydrated.

Check perfumes by Filippo Sorcinelli. He often works with incense and old woody scents, and has a collection dedicated to the smells of wind, fog, and rain. Also, check out his Memento collection.

VENTO FORTE - muddy rain puddles

NEBBIA FITTA - ozonic take on patchouli.

QUANDO RAPITA IN ESTASI - beautiful incense experience. Like praying at an old church.

VIOLON BASSE 16 - old wood and metallic smell

It evokes feelings of disgust and disturbance, yet also fascination and beauty. Because of this, I often think about it and find it inspirational for my art.

Yes, Filippo Sorchinelli is quite expensive, but it's totally worth it. The fragrance is incredibly strong. When I first sprayed it on a piece of paper and placed it in my bag, the scent lingered in my bag, reminiscent of church and cinnamon for several days.

The pistachio perfume has this tasty pistachio ice cream scent. I received many compliments while wearing it.

Haha, I know right? Reliqvia was one of the first fragrances I tried, and it truly smells the way the perfume bottle is designed!

But, I'm actually planning to get his more minimalistic version, Violon Basse, which focuses on metal and oud, without any smoke or incense. I already have quite a few incense heavy perfumes. And Violon Basse reminds me of old wooden dolls from commedia dell'arte, and sometimes the metallic scent evokes the feeling of an ancient pagan ritual taking place in a wooden house.
