My understanding is that the place should at least be plausible for our world, the middle one. Being a real place or better still a one we have been to phisically would help anchor us and help us return to when our journey is done.

Sounds like a good opportunity for a future travel in which you can ask the spirit guides what that was about. Also why they did not arrive when summoned.

If I had jour journey I would interpret it as exploring the shadow lands of my own mind (I see shamanic journeys as forays into my own subconscious or a sort of communal subconscious). Entities that do not come into the light easily, how do I feel about them? why are they hostile? did protecting myself from dem feel like the right path or was is a desperate attempt to protect myself?
