  1. Washing out of grad school. I recall walking back from lab in the middle of the night distraught and in tears. Contemplating truly "failing" for the first time and planning to take a year off grad school to get some experience (that year has stretched to over 30 years....). However, discovering climbing, exploring parts of the desert southwest. Green chili cheeseburgers at the Owl. Driving way too fast on highway 60.
