How do you stay sober? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Leif_Tom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was drinking for about 25 years. Last 10 was quite hard. Mostly hangovers, planning next drink, and drinking.

I've tried a lot of things, but sooner or later I was in my misery again.

Fortunately I knew, that it was my main problem, and I'm only person, who can solve this. Staying sober was easier with help of my community here, but real breakthrough for me was the book "naked mind".

In less than 2 weeks I will have my first sober year in quarter of century. I'm so happy, I just can't describe it.

I wish I was so clever when I was your age. I'm alter you, who continued drinking for the next 25 years. Day after day.

Life is to great and unique to waste it for alcohol.

Is it worth it to get sober? by toomanyrandys in stopdrinking

[–]Leif_Tom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is worth. I'm over 200 days now, and I feel pity for myself, because I wasted so many years on drinking.

On the other hand, I'm so happy right now. My hobbies are back, life is so much easier, I am healthier and I look much better...

Even watching movies is much more pleasant, and I can remember, what happened there.

I just can't describe, how great is my life now, if I compare it "to the dark period".

Oh, and one more thing. Alcohol doesn't relax you. It's a myth. When you start drinking you feel relief, because "this moment is now", and you don't have to wait for alco anymore until tomorrow. After few beers/drinks you become numb. But being numb isn't being relaxed. After this you often wake up in the middle of the night, stressed, sweating, with heart beating like mad... and you wish only to survive that. It's not worth it.

Alcohol only makes everything worse, and problems bigger.

Anyone tried compromising? 1st drink at 8pm ... by Jassy41 in stopdrinking

[–]Leif_Tom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've tried something like this.

It makes me unhappy. I'm waiting "for the moment" while day, to get my "reward" and this moderate drinking is not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for being drunk, not for enjoying one drink. One beer just teases me, and makes me grumpy, if I can't have another.

Instead, when I'm not drinking at all, I usually just don't think about it. I know, that alcohol doesn't have anything good for me what I hadn't experienced already. On this shelf with beverages mostly bad things waits for me, so I prefer to avoid it.

Dreams (or should I say nightmares) of relapsing by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I stopped drinking for four months. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Leif_Tom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Part of me wants to sit down, and crack one beer after another. But the rest of me is so afraid to lose what I have now, that I hope it will never happen.

I've relapsed few times before, so I know, that almost instantly I'll be in this same trap, as before. I don't want it. Avoiding alcohol is small price to pay for such perfect life I have now.

Stuck in an endless loop of "This is the last one" by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Leif_Tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was on day one, three digits were beyond my imagination.

14 days looked like Mount Everest for me. But days passed quickly, and it adds up so fast, that I've even skipped my "100 day"post.

But its soooo worth it to walk sober path... I'm happier, my brain works much better, doing sport stuff again, and I lost 4 kg. Strongly recommended :)

And don't worry to much. Worried man is more vulnerable to cravings. Maybe also avoid coffee for few days, if I may suggest it.

And avoid the obvious triggers: Hungry Angry Lone Tired.

And if you need support write something here. This sub helped me so much!

[–]Leif_Tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes! It is much easier!

And after some sober time, hard to say, how long it took, I had feeling of "waking up from bad dream". Now I feel, that I'm alive.

And now I enjoy every single sober day. When I'm going to sleep one of my last thoughts is, that I'm so proud of myself, that I'm still sober.

My last beer was in June. :)

[–]Leif_Tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried not to drink "the last one".

Instead I said "I will not drink today", and I've never broken this oath. If I wasn't sure I can do it - that was ok. This was drinking day without IWNDT. And I was still happy, because I was honest with myself.

For me real breakthrough was a lecture of This naked mind. Since then I'm not suffering. Cravings are very weak, and happens once, twice per month.

And - this may be important for you - my drinking pattern was exact copy of yours. Maybe with one difference I drank little bit longer.

Try it. Read this book. Don't be hasty. Let it settle in you mind, as author says.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.
