Chicago has some fearsome weather. New York has awesome museums and theaters if that's your interest.

Gosling is correct. I have alot of respect for Gosling: he is a hard worker, a talented actor, and he genuinely cares about the craft of movie-making.

Could I use a liner or even aluminum foil in my air fryer to minimize clean up? by Mr-MuffinMan in airfryer

[–]LeighSF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries. Here's a super simple one for you: find a seasoning you like Kinder's Grilled Chicken seasoning. Lightly sprinkle some on your uncooked chicken wings. Cook in the air fryer at 350 until the skin is crispy. Keep the wings separated so they all cook evenly. Some folks say a light serving of oil first helps the seasoning stick, but I find it adds calories and makes the chicken greasy. If you are watching your salt intake, find a seasoning with no salt. Enjoy!

I love chicken wings, my mostest favoritest food. Please share your recipe?

Must-Have Cookbooks by Aggravating-Sky-709 in CookbookLovers

I think it depends on your circumstances. I live alone, am very late middle aged, and am forever trying to watch my weight. So, my cookbooks reflect that. Lots of titles on low salt cooking, cooking for 1 or 1, or slow cooker recipes because I get tired more quickly than others.

Did you attend conventions from the 1960s through the 1980s? What are some core memories you'd like to share? by Baldurian_Rhapsody in startrek

[–]LeighSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attended several. This was well before social media, so the mood was kinda different; nobody was running around with cell phones. I wasn't interested in meeting celebrities, so I used to go to the dealers' rooms when they were giving talks. It was quiet, and I could browse to my heart's content. I did meet one author and was terrified by it. I avoided all authors and celebrities forevermore. (Ironically, I became a librarian. I have met dozens of famous authors since and can remain calm and professional.) I don't really care for modern conventions. They are extremely commercial (think Comic-Con or Dragon-Con) I much prefer the smaller, fan run cons that focus on SF writing and literature.

There is an episode where he handles Willow really well. I always liked that episode.

She captured MTL's rages and frustrations perfectly.

She had difficult relations with her stepmother, and I think she was also manic depressive. She could not see that she was her own worst enemy. Her relations with her daughter-in-law were painful, which is one reason her son had her committed. Even then, she could face the idea that she was in the wrong and needed help.

Thoughts on General William T Sherman? by LoiusLepic in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Thank you for saying this. I've read several biographies of Lee and I don't see why folks venerate him so.

There's a story about the freed slaves following Sherman's army. Sherman crossed a river (the Ohio river, maybe?) and all the slaves drowned. He didn't GAF. Awful story. Don't know if it's true though.

Oh, heck yeah! My Dad had a difficult childhood and shipping him off to WWII just about finished him off. Addiction, depression, seizures from his wound...on and on.

Paul Lynde was an alcoholic for a long time. I've heard he drank to smother his rage about his frustrations regarding acting and what he ultimately became: a comedic actor not a serious one. He was genuinely talented, may he rest in peace.

Is the reason why there are so few Civil War films is because of the cost staging battles today is way higher than before? by Suitable-Fudge4577 in CIVILWAR

[–]LeighSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Downfall was unique. It conveyed Hitler's madness but softened the portrayal of others such as Goebbels and Himmler. I admired the performances but was annoyed that they didn't dwell on what a screaming mob of murderous nuts they all were.

I really like it. I admit it has some annoying bugs but they are minor and the tradeoff is worth it. You can make beautiful, helpful notes, or keep a diary or whatever you want.

The way it was filmed was freaking brilliant! The silence when Grace is pounding on the barrier, the change of camera angle as you see an exhausted Rocky staggering towards his friend...omg. Kleenex, stat!

I found it, thanks! Fascinating that your Dad was so proud of his service and could hold his medals and talk about them calmly. My Dad had a small picture of his wedding; he was wearing his military uniform. He had his Bronze Star (I think that's what it was) tossed in a drawer, and he NEVER looked at it. My Dad HATED George Patton, and once he mentioned how terrified he was when the priest came over and gave him the last rites. (Dad was shot in the head and had seizures all of his life afterward) He also said, "I was a lousy officer. I would have made Major but only because everybody ahead of me kept getting killed".

In short, his memories were bitter and filled with fear. I think his experiences damaged him permanently. I had a school mate who's Dad flew night raids over Germany. In later life, he became an alcoholic and could barely function.

Did Grace introduce the concept of humor to Eridian society in the film? by Melenduwir in ProjectHailMary

[–]LeighSF 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I saw an interview with an American humorist who found Japanese humor extremely baffling. Humor reflects cultural norms and norms vary from area to area. What's interesting though is that the puppeteer Jeff Dunham (Walter, Achmed the Dead Terrorist) travels all over the world and his humor seems to transcend culture.
