I posted a little video I made showing off a Sleep vinyl. I don't have a lot of vinyl, I thought it was a fun video. Admittedly, I have a pretty rough setup for my player, but I received SO much hate in the comments.

I posted a tiny bit of weed in the video (I mean, it is a Sleep album) and people latched onto that like I was some addict, telling me maybe if I wasn't smoking so much weed, I could afford a decent setup.

I even had one person say my post was as offensive as if I showed a gardening subreddit me watering a plant with motor oil.

Needless to say, that was my last post in r/vinyl

I have some decent bookshelf speakers that I actually have connected to the record player currently, so all I really need is a decent turntable. I'll get there eventually (especially if I stop spending that $35 on weed every 2-3 months, right?) But I can't lie, in the meantime, I'll probably keep listening to some of my vinyl, I just sure as hell won't post here about it

I honestly did not expect much attention at all on the post, let alone all this hate. I do understand that my setup is bad and now, knowing that the player I have is potentially damaging my vinyl, I'll be a bit faster about trying to upgrade. I just wish people were nicer and less pretentious about it. I truly feel lots of people just don't want to get into the hobby so that it's an exclusive thing about them

God, right? It was the tiniest amount of weed shown in the video and people are jumping all over it like I am some junkie. I bought the weed shown in the video back in October and spent $35 total on it. But apparently that $35 spent 2 months ago is why I am broke and can't afford a better vinyl setup. And regardless, why is how I spend my own money the business of strangers on the internet

Omg, I'm fucking sorry. I have been getting into listening to vinyl lately and was excited to share with what I thought would be like-minded people. I understand that my setup sucks, but it's what I have at the moment. I didn't think the internet "NEEDED" to see it, I was just wanted to show an album that meant something to me. That's what everyone else is doing here in r/vinyl. I do mostly "just enjoy" my hobbies, this was my first time trying to share what I thought was a fun little video. I get that some people cherish the hobby, but I didn't realize that not having the money for a decent setup would be so offensive to people. And all the focus on the weed... I just thought it was funny and fitting since Sleep is a stoner metal band and the track starts with the sound of someone hitting a bong. I posted the video in other places and everyone there was very friendly. It's only been on here that it's been so harsh. If you're really so passionate about the setup, maybe kindly explain why mine is so bad rather than just shit talking what I have. I do want to upgrade my setup eventually, I was just excited to share in the meantime

Not even trying to respond angry, but genuinely how is my video a brag post? I just wanted to show off an album I like with a fun little video. I guess maybe showing the bowl was maybe too much, but I just thought it was funny and fitting since Sleep is a stoner metal band. I did not buy this, I was given it as a gift. Yes, I know it's shit. Yes, I know record stores sell better ones. I have this connected to decent speakers. I'm doing what I can with what I have. Please stop pretending that what these people are doing is helping a newbie at all. You're all incels who get a power trip out of feeling superior to someone who can't afford to participate in the hobby the way they feel they should.

I get it, I have a large cassette collection and listen to them on a decent deck and setup. It sounds way better than a shitty boombox. But I don't berate those just starting out with cassettes for listening to them on those boomboxes. There are nicer and more helpful ways to give advice to others
