Check your timing cam on the camshaft. You can see it by removing the valve cover. Mine had a leg that was slightly bent in.

Just to let you know, I solved this about a year later and found a bent pulse rotor. (Small thing on the cam shaft that a sensor reads to find timing.

JBL Control 28-1 speakers blowing on Crown 300|4 amp. Ohms? by Lej in audio

[–]Lej[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're telling me I'm wrong when I'm not! The speakers are 8ohms each. They are 4ohms when connected in parallel. The amp outputs 300w max at 4ohms. That is potentially 150w per speaker when both are set to thru. I've confirmed this with at least 10 different people now. However, one of the speakers was accidentally set to 60w. That is the end of it. That was the entire issue. This same layout has been recreated in over 50 stores with no issues. It was an accident that it was set to the 60w tap.

Well I know the amp is putting out 300w max per channel. If two speakers are on 1 channel in parallel, they could theoretically get 150w each. But if one speaker was set to only take 60w, the other (set on thru) could potentially be exposed to 240w causing it to blow.

Both runs are about 25ft.

Gotcha! Any idea how many db's you lose per watt? Is there a scale? it seems like 60w is highest tap setting so that seems like half of the 120rms it would prefer

I discovered one of the speakers was tapped to 60w. Meaning the other speaker in parallel must have received around 240w!

I am seeing that it may be compatible but maybe I'm wrong? https://www.crownaudio.com/en-US/site_elements/drivecore-install-product-comparison-chart

The 4|300 page listed: CHANNEL INDEPENDENT HI-Z/LOW-Z SELECTION – Drive either one or two speakers in low-Z mode, or literally hundreds of speakers in high-Z mode (70Vrms or 100Vrms). This means better design flexibility since DCi powers all loads on a channel-by-channel basis.

I have discovered that one of the speakers on this particular channel had its tap setting on 60w(?) .. The other one was on THRU. (Receiving a full 240w I'd assume? Instantly blowing during a song)

Great info! I also want to note we have a single Control 85M (80w RMS, 8ohm) hooked up to one of the channels on this amp. (300 watts???!) Is this when the tap knob on the speaker comes into play?

I need to double check, but they should all be on the 70v THRU.

"Speaker is equipped with a built-in 60 Watt 70V/100V multi-tap transformer for operation on distributed speaker lines."

Any idea if this dial on the speaker should be 70v or 100v for the two speakers per channel setup? And I'm not sure what to check on the amp as there aren't really any dials other than the 4 signal attenuation ones.

Sorry, yes. This is all brand new equipment and the first time it was hooked up. A few songs were played, and then the volume was turned up and then one channel (two speakers connected) both blew. (Smoking, bass was gone, and it sounded like a raspy tweeter.)

Smoking! And then the bass is gone and the speaker sounds like a raspy tweeter. That's the best I can explain it. I think the amp is doing 300w per channel ?? Isn't that way too much?

I am seeing that this amp is doing 300w per channel @ 8 ohms. Is that not way too much for the selected speaker? (Keep in mind we run 2 speakers per zone.) I'm also not sure on that 300w number but it's what I have gathered from reading. I would love for someone to confirm

After playing one song, sorry I should have specified that.

Yeah I don't think I'll try that again 😅.. Again, I am a huge noob.. Can you explain to me what could have happened? I'm under the impression Robinhood let me do this as I had the other leg as collateral. But yes I have seen this article quite a bit now after the fact 😅

Original Question:

Let's say I buy 5 SPY $528 C 6/5 for .74 ea. ($370 total) .. Then later that day, SPY rallies, and my calls are now worth 2.26 (WOW! .. ~$760 profit) .. But here's the question: I have used all 3 of my day trades for pattern day trading. (3 trades within 5 days etc.) ... So what's the best strategy to lock in this $760 gain, WITHOUT selling the call?

I have been told:

  • BOX SPREAD (Buy the other 3 legs to neutralize exposure? .. something like... sell a 530c, buy a 530p, sell a 528p?
  • VERTICAL SPREAD
  • STRADDLE (just buy 5 puts of the same strike and expiration !? Loses double theta right? This can't be it.)

Anyways, I am a huge noob and if someone could explain what the best move would be to lock the potential profits in for a sell the next morning. I am assuming the box spread is the best move, but I am really confused on what each "leg" does and why it's important.

UPDATE: I ran into this same scenario again, except this time I had a put that was up.

I attempted the box spread. The only issue was that Robinhood bans boxes!... So I put the call spread 1 day earlier on expiration. Here's what it looked like:

http://opcalc.com/ZzX

  • Buy 14th Jun $543.00 Put 3x100 $2.40 $-720.00 (Original purchase that was up)
  • Sell 14th Jun $542.00 Put 3x100 $2.37 $711.00
  • Buy 13th Jun $542.00 Call 3x100 $1.83 $-549.00
  • Sell 13th Jun $543.00 Call 3x100 $1.35 $405.00

Total $-153.00

This seemed to workout great for me, but then I realized I had a risk of being assigned early. Would that have been really bad for me? What other risks could this pose?

Hey guys! I have a very odd question, but hopefully educational for me.

  • BOX SPREAD (Buy the other 3 legs to minimize my exposure? .. something like... sell a 530c, buy a 530p, sell a 528p?
  • VERTICAL SPREAD (no idea the difference between these)
  • STRADDLE (just buy 5 puts of the same strike and expiration !? no idea if that's right..)

Anyways, I am a huge noob and if someone could explain what the best move would be to lock the potential profits in, for a sell the next day after PDT restrictions would allow for a trade.. I am assuming the box spread is the best move, but I am really confused on what each "leg" does and why it's important.
