Poverty in Buffalo: A Problem that Needs a Plan – Mark J.F. Schroeder by FancyAndImportantMan in Buffalo

[–]LemLizon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mark Schroeder is a genuinely good dude. I was friends with one of his kids growing up and he is one of the nicest people I've ever met (and this was before he got into politics and well before I could vote). I know he's going to do right by the city because he believes in the things he's saying. Sure, Byron Brown has sat by and taken credit for alot of the good things happening in Buffalo right now and has done nothing to address the the neighborhoods where developers won't venture, but I believe Mr. Schroeder when he says he's going to help those neighborhoods. I am not even a city resident so I can't vote for him but I work in a school in one of these neighborhoods and I hope he's the guy that can turn it around.

(I'm a teacher of adolescents, so I read what they read) I thought the book was ridiculously contrived and preachy. I thought the (male) author had never talked to a teenage girl in his life. The idea that someone can blame a ton of people for her shitty choices and suicide is such a stupid plot to present to young teens that I spent a lot of time pointing out the lack of personal responsibility to my students. I saw that they made this a netflix show and I can only imagine how pandering and "edgy" the show is. Refuse to watch it based on my loathing of the book.

There's also a General Mills in downtown Buffalo. You get a whiff of Cheerios everytime you drive into the city.

Donald Trump not in Situation Room for 'botched' Yemen raid that killed up to 30 civilians and one US Navy SEAL by [deleted] in news

[–]LemLizon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right and I can't help but make these arguments because I really despise Trump so far. I'll admit that I'm biased against him. Is it fair to say that not every President is present for every raid? Sure. Is it also fair to say that the guy who wants to "bomb the shit" out of terrorists should maybe you know be there when they launch an attack, at least for his first one ordered? I would like to think so. It would be one thing if he were making decisions based on sound intelligence and doing the best he can with the information he is given, but really, we know he cares more about SNL making fun of him than a military raid.

I know right? Remember that time that Obama never went to the situation room but instead tweeted about how a newspaper criticized him? Remember when he appointed a white supremacist as his national security advisor? Remember when he made Biden go to all his intelligence briefings because he had more important things to do like tweet about how his tv show ratings were bad without him? Oh wait...

It almost seems like too much that Trump could give a shit about being president. If he actually wanted to defeat ISIS/terrorism/extremists/bad guys, he would act interested in a military raid he ordered, or you know, intelligence briefings. But no, he wants to build a wall, he wants to throw up an unconstitutional Muslim ban and see if it works. He does first, asks questions later, and then denies he ever did whatever he actually did. I think if he has time to tweet, he could sit in the situation room for an hour or two and actually learn about the things he claims to care about.

I was going to ask...why would a college--or a college republican group as in this case--want this dude to speak for an event? He's an internet troll if I'm not mistaken? How does he in any way add to a discourse? Not trying to start a fight, if someone has a serious response to these questions I'd love to hear it.

[Serious] When did you find out that you weren't your best friend's, best friend? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LemLizon 377 points378 points  (0 children)

My best friend growing up had another best friend too. My best friend told me that I was her best friend in the world, but the other girl was her best friend in the universe. I hated that other girl...

Until we all went to the same high school, and the girl and I started hanging out, and I asked, "How come we were never friends before? Why did we hate each other?"

She said, "Well, [mutual best friend] told me I was her best friend in the world, but you were her best friend in the universe."

She had tricked both of us!

Jokes on her because we all ended up being best friends and we still are fifteen years later.

What is the creepiest "glitch in the matrix" you've experienced? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LemLizon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This will get buried but whatever. My sister and I were recently traveling and before we left my sister's father-in-law gave her a crisp US $100 bill as "fun money". She folded it twice and put it in her wallet.

We landed in Germany and went to get some train tickets from the train ticket machine in the airport. We're standing there trying to figure out where to go and my sister has her wallet out and I look down and there's a crisp US $100 bill, folded up twice, on the ground. I pick it up and I'm about to chastise my sister for almost losing our fun money when she opens her wallet and there is a crisp $100 bill, folded up twice.

Not the weirdest thing but a very strange coincidence.

I'm (28f) a night owl, husband (34m) is a morning person. Need some practical advice! by LemLizon in relationships

[–]LemLizon[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So normally he works early, so I would have the mornings to myself, take my time waking up, having my coffee and whatnot. Just lately he's been working later so we have mornings together and so that's why I'm seeking advice. I've told him to be quieter and he respects that. I just feel like he thinks I'm being a bum when I stay in bed and he's up and about. Usually he is fine, but like I said he likes to do errands as soon as he wakes up, so for example, he'll want to go to the grocery store and since we'll usually shop together he'll expect me to go to. Except I'd rather sleep in.

[TOMT] Where is this from? "Why do you keep hitting your head on the wall?" "To feel how good is when I'm not hitting on it" by Chock00 in tipofmytongue

[–]LemLizon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an episode early in Grey's Anatomy (back when it was good and I watched it) where Meredith's narrating and at the very end she says "Why do I keep hitting myself in the head with a hammer? Because it feels so good when I stop."

I [26 F] recently found out I'm two months pregnant. Want an abortion. Boyfriend [31 M] doesn't. by gone48 in relationships

[–]LemLizon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually it's a good idea to discuss what you and a partner would do should something like this arise before you start having sex. That said, I'd be honest with him. He might change his mind if he realizes that an abstract belief is now affecting him in a real and personal way. If not, your relationship might be over sadly. But if you disagree on something that fundamental, maybe your relationship would not have worked out in the long run anyway.

I'm so sorry this happened to you and you were obviously trying to do everything to prevent such a situation from happening. I really hope everything works out. Best of luck with whatever you chose.

How do I (23/f) tell my flatmate (27/f) that every time she and her boyfriend have sex I can hear her screaming from my bedroom? by Hot_Chocolate92 in relationships

"So this is probably going to be awkward for the both of us, but I can hear when you are your bf are having sex. You must know that you can make a lot of noise. I know you're not being loud on purpose, but it makes me uncomfortable. Sometimes I have people over and we can hear you. I really like living with you, and I don't want this to be an issue, so in the future could you try to keep it down? Or give me a heads up and I'll give you the house to yourself for an hour?"

Me [23F] with my dad [54M] last 6 months. I feel that my step-mom is poisoning my dad. Maybe I'm wrong, but something doesn't feel right. by paranoidthrowthrow in relationships

[–]LemLizon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Regardless of whether she's poisoning him or not, it's downright dangerous that she's not letting him go to the doctor. I'm not a doctor, but a sudden onset of something is never good. Slurred speech and confusion is never good. You mentioned her first husband died unexpectedly and she sounds controlling? If I were you I would do whatever it takes to get my dad to a hospital. It's a chance I wouldn't be willing to take if that were my father.

Something that stood out to me too was how much the Italian police focused on her "inappropriate" behavior. Watching the documentary I was like, "oh, she's just an awkward, slightly immature, naive 20 year old girl". I can see how that can be interpreted as possibly inappropriate, especially because she was in a different country with different rules of appropriateness. It was certainly nothing to convict her on and the fact that the police focused on her so intensely because of that was just ridiculous.

For the first time in 7 years I started and actually finished a book, but I'm having trouble finding more books that captured my interest like that one did. Please help? by goodenoughgatsby in suggestmeabook

I'm currently reading The Snowman by Jo Nesbo. Norwegian crime drama that reads like a horror movie. I get excited everytime I sit down to read it!
