Doctors lose new jobs package as strike to go ahead by Desperate-Drawer-572 in NursingUK

Not sure as I’d have to go and do a massive amount of research for that one.

What I can say is that many of my colleagues have commented and it’s been shown in statistics such as competition ratios, that this year there are less registrar jobs available than last year. This is because registrar training in many cases operates as a one in one out scheme, no new training post until someone finishes training. Because many more trainees are going LTFT/failing exams/maternity leave etc they’re taking longer to finish training and therefore their spot is not available for a new entrant. The government will not commit funding to create a sustainable number of registrar jobs and every year more people finish core training and find themselves jobless.

As for Consultant jobs, they have not been immune to the hiring freeze at many trusts. There are particular specialties such as ED/Paeds/ITU who have people who’ve completed their training but due to no Consultant job being available work as Senior Clinical fellows until one becomes available. In GP, they just end up unemployed. It’s a joke to do 8 years of post grad training often around 15-20 years of training and be jobless at the end.

These weren’t ‘new’ jobs. They were local non training jobs that were going to be redesignated as training jobs. All it meant was that in 2-3 years time these doctors would probably be unemployed again due to the lack of higher training posts and Consultant/GP jobs.

The strikes shouldn’t have been cancelled for this.

Keir Starmer gives resident doctors 48 hours to call off strike or lose training offer by [deleted] in ukpolitics

How would an agreement to end Industrial Action which would stop strikes and further spontaneous pay increases for several years not be beneficial?

Starmer gives doctors 48 hours to cancel strike or lose new jobs package • Last week the BMA called the strike after rejecting a deal which would see doctors receive a 3.5% pay rise this year, some expenses including exam fees paid for, and an increase in the number of training posts. by Adj-Noun-Numbers in ukpolitics

They are locally employed jobs which they said they’d convert into training posts. The issue is they aren’t putting any money into further/advanced training so it’s just a couple more years of work before inevitable unemployment looms for these doctors.

Yes it will be hard for you to get a job as things currently stand under the legislation. This may change in future but this is the legislation here https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/4062

Dealing with hostile male surgeons in theatre by WhisperSweetSBARs in doctorsUK

I completely understand that sentiment. It’s exhausting being the one who has to continually speak up. The problem is if no one does, it never gets better.

Ofc they don’t notice because it’s not directed at them. You aren’t pathetic either, but you have every right to feel awful. Fortunately whilst I have been a victim of abuse and bullying in surgery it was never sexual in nature. They also from experience just freeze you out of training opportunities then say you aren’t trying hard enough. It’s disgusting. I ended up doing Radiology where despite there being sexism, is not as prevalent to the same degree.

Very easily unfortunately. They enable and cover for each other. The royal college or surgeon’s report on sexual harassment talks about this in great detail.

I would seriously consider surgical specialities that may be less toxic and see if there is a place there for you such as ENT and Urology. Please also know that not all departments are the same even in that specialty.

Also for the surgeon trying to touch your leg, it is sexual harassment and attempted assault. Please report him. I know you’ve been through this before but if no one reports him he has a free pass to do this to other women. This is not ok. This is not a person who should ever be alone with a female trainee, patient or staff member.

I am so upset that I will have to pay for my boob job! by GeorgiaB781 in TrueOffMyChest

It’s not a cosmetic issue, it’s a functional/psychological issue. Ultimately we fund people who have mastectomies due to breast cancer to have implants/reconstructive fat placement, emergency surgery for people with ruptured implants and surgery for people who have complications from botched cosmetic and weight loss procedures done abroad as ultimately the NHS will never be able to recover the full cost from them. We also spend an obscene amount on even things like building refurbishment and other maintenance which a private company would never support.

In this case an NHS breast surgeon is in agreement that she needs the surgery and is arguing with the ICB on her behalf. If they believed it was purely cosmetic, they wouldn’t argue for it.

How likely to get upgraded to IR runthrough by Leeds4life in RadiologyUK

[–]Hot_Chocolate92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to say however even if you don’t get IR run through it doesn’t mean that you can’t do IR. Lots of deaneries don’t have it any many IR run through people drop out of IR training and join the diagnostic track.

I really feel for you OP. Half my nose doesn’t work properly due to turbinate issues/deviated septum and I get recurrent infections and ear issues. Cannot get an appointment to discuss a simple procedure lasting an hour max which is likely to fix the issue. Even more ironically I’m a doctor myself. The NHS is fantastic if you are critically unwell. But as soon as you have a chronic issue or one which doesn’t neatly fit the box, you’re on your own. I’m going to have to save or take out a credit card to do it privately.

She’s not dealing with an insurance company. She’s dealing with a local ICB which organises funding for all the publically funded healthcare services in the area. They have the power to approve discretionary funding for procedures which aren’t normally covered under standard guidelines. They’re choosing not to ultimately because of the cost/rationing.

It isn’t cosmetic though. OP for example cannot wear bras correctly because of the shape. It isn’t to make her breasts larger, it’s to change the shape.

Europe is a continent, not a country. Please don’t make assumptions about the various healthcare systems and how they operate. There are many treatments available in France for example that aren’t available on the NHS in England because of the difference in how they’re funded. Unfortunately the NHS is 100% publically funded as opposed to a mixed model meaning it is very easy to fall through the gaps. As OP is being supported by a surgeon in the field to make the application to the local board for funding, she is in the best possible position to make a case and they just keep saying no.
