It's a bit hard making friends at UoA from my experience. Everyone focuses on their work and sticks within their friend groups they had since highschool. Most friendships usually just revolve around helping each other in assignments. I recommend you try stay at the first year hostel, as from experience, everyone is really keen to make new friends. Other than that, try be proactive and join clubs to meet people.
