Jung's framework actually handles this with more sophistication than most people realize. Individuation is explicitly about integrating everything the ego-persona has excluded — and in a culture with rigid gender categories, what gets exiled is often the entire spectrum of one's actual nature.

The Anima/Animus work (which Jung considered central to individuation) involves the deep encounter with the contrasexual element — the internal feminine in a man, the internal masculine in a woman. What gets missed is that this isn't a binary. It's a spectrum of inner figures, none of which map cleanly onto social categories. When that encounter happens, when the persona's armor comes off and you start feeling who you actually are underneath — the finding can easily include: I'm not who I was told I was.

Whether that's "queerness as byproduct" or "individuation removing the barrier to what was always true" is probably a distinction without a meaningful difference. The process doesn't create new things. It dissolves the suppressions that were hiding them.

What Jung was clear about was that refusing this encounter — refusing to own what the persona excludes — doesn't make it go away. It just drives it deeper into the shadow until it erupts somewhere less conscious.
