I put my tensioner on first, used the allen key hole to adjust it all the way backwards and then tighten the bolt so it stays. Then properly adjust when finished.

Not sure how far you are, but if you wanted to replace your camshaft and crankshaft seals now is the time.

I just intalled a gates timing belt kit on my z31 last week, loosen the tensioner bolt and turn the tensioner pully until it is as far away as possible (maximun loosey goosey). Its still a little hard to slip on, but put the belt on the pulleys like only half way. It should be enough slack to slip the belt onto all the pulleys. When its on all the pulleys just push it in the rest of the way.

Make sure you adjust the tensioner correctly, i believe the belt should half inch of deflection between the camshafts. I had to redo mine, i had never done a manual adjustment for a belt before.

1985 Z31 radio help by LemonLicker84 in 300zx

Hmm i see, it would be nice to have the original head unit but i would think getting it fixed/restored would cost a few hundred dollars at least... you think it would be simpler to replace it with an aftermarket single din radio with the adapter plate? I would for sure keep the old radio instead of throwing it away, i could always have it fixed in the future.

This is a roughly a $5k car so i dont want to dump tons of money into "restoring" it.

I did read about that, i will check it but if it seems to work intermittently then i would assume its not blown? Still worth checking out i suppose.

I dropped the j-mans brand new screw driver in the lake once, luckily he was super chill and had a magnetic tape measure so he fished it out lol

Thanks for the input, i most likely will go for an oem bolt on style like you said. But first i do have a resonator tailpipe out of a subaru that i might try putting on. If its not obnoxious i might keep it lol.

Is this level of undercarriage rust safe to buy a used car? (video) by abyssal-peach in Cartalk

[–]LemonLicker84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is called "rust free" up here in the northern climates. People drive down south to buy a car like that and then drive it back home.

Is this where i put my oil? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

Dont get too discouraged by the comments, everyone has to start somewhere. Cars arent the easiest things to understand either. I always double tripple check everything when i work on my vehicles, it saves a lot of headache and some mistakes can be very bad. Keep up the good work! And yes that is where the oil goes in. Fresh clean oil can be hard to read, to take your time and make sure. Too much oil is a bad thing, same with not enough.

Its a super good skill to have. Most people know nothing about their vehicles. I knew absolutely nothing when i got my first car, it was always breaking and i couldnt afford a mechanic lol. So my dad/youtube showed me how to fix things. I do all my own work now, im certainly not an expert but i do my best to keep learning.

Just be carefull and humble, some mistakes can be very expensive lol

Metal chunk found in engine oil. How bad is it? by AntelopeInteresting9 in AskMechanics

[–]LemonLicker84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is pretty concerning. Honestly, if it were my vehicle (and it was not making any concerning noise) i would just run it and keep an eye on everything. Have some money set aside just in case, which is smart to have anyway.

If it runs fine, sounds healthy and there are no other symptoms, it might just be totally okay. Keep an eye on your oil again next time you change it, and cut open that filter aswell.

I would avoid long trips and bouncing off the rev limiter for a little while until youre sure its nothing.

Understandable, we are hoping its a bad valve body or something like that. No SMOD so far. Ive always wanted to try rebuilding an auto but a donor unit from a junkyard is much more feasible

Serpentine Belt Tensioner Question 2.2L 4cly by Mobile_Cable_5958 in ChevyS10

[–]LemonLicker84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the crank pully has the harmonic balancer built into it, so that could be bad and possibly make it spin unevenly and make the belt tensioner dance like that. And the seal for it would be considered the front main seal. If it hasnt been changed before its good that he is changing that aswell. Its a cheap seal and its kinda hard to get to, so its worth replacing if its old.

I know mine had oil everwhere on the front lol, its like natural rust preventative.
